Ash Sutton began his career in karting, swiftly claiming several titles. Progressing to single-seaters, he finished fourth in the 2010 Formula Vee Championship, earning Rookie of the Year honours.
After three years away from the track, Sutton returned in 2014, finishing third in the British Formula Ford Championship. In 2015, he switched to tin-tops with Team BMR and Team Pyro, clinching the Renault UK Clio Cup title with six wins and 14 podiums.
Sutton made his BTCC debut in 2016 with Triple Eight Racing, driving an MG6. His first season saw him secure a race win, two pole positions, and the Jack Sears Trophy.
For the 2017 campaign, Sutton joined Adrian Flux Subaru Racing, switching to rear-wheel drive machinery. His six race wins and nine podiums led to his first BTCC title in just his second season, making him the youngest champion since 1966. He secured the title after a tense final weekend battle with double champion Colin Turkington.
Despite a strong showing in 2018 with six race victories, Sutton’s Subaru lacked early-season consistency, and he managed just one win in the 2019 campaign.
In 2020, Sutton joined Laser Tools Racing, driving the Infiniti Q50. His consistency, with points in 26 of 27 rounds, earned him his second overall BTCC title and the Independents’ crown, clinching the championship in the final race.
Sutton stayed with the team in 2021, achieving nine podiums and 27 top-ten finishes out of 30 rounds. His consistent approach secured an unassailable points lead, earning him a third BTCC title.
In 2022, Sutton moved to NAPA Racing UK, driving a Ford Focus ST. He finished outside the points-paying positions only twice and won three races. Sutton entered the season finale in third place and finished the year second in the title battle, narrowly edging out rival Jake Hill.
In 2023, Sutton built on his experience with the Ford Focus ST, securing his record-equalling fourth BTCC title. In 2024, he aims to take the record outright.
