WHO SET THE PACE IN 2022?

18th November 2022

Following another thrilling Kwik Fit British Touring Car Championship, it’s time to crunch the numbers and determine who the best qualifying performers were across the 2022 campaign. Let’s break down the top three...

In terms of the best average qualifying position, ROKiT MB Motorsport’s Jake Hill claims the top spot with an average of 3.9. The Kent racer was consistently impressive throughout the campaign, claiming two pole positions, as well as a further five top-three finishes. To top it off, Hill only qualified outside the top five twice this season, truly maximising his qualifying opportunity.

Next up was Bristol Street Motors with EXCELR8 Trade Price Cars.com’s Tom Ingram, who secured his maiden championship in 2022. In a similar style to Hill, Ingram has held a steady record this year, with a pair of pole positions, and only once found himself outside the top ten on the grid. Due to his consistency, the 29-year-old's average qualifying position was an impressive 5.3.

In third comes Colin Turkington (Team BMW). Turkington’s average position was only a small margin behind Ingram, being 5.6, despite qualifying outside the top nine on three occasions during the campaign. The Northern Irishman reinforced his strong qualifying performance, however, by securing a trio of pole positions in 2022 – the highest total of the grid.

Looking at their records throughout the year, it’s no surprise that this trio top the average qualifying table, and clinched pole seven times between them during the campaign while, interestingly, the other three drivers to claim P1 sit ninth and joint 11th.
