Sutton secures second win of the season

25th August 2024

NAPA Racing UK’s Ash Sutton scored his second win of the 2024 Kwik Fit British Touring Car Championship, closing in on the standings lead at Donington Park after a race two triumph.

In what could have been one of the most pivotal races of the campaign so far, the championship's top five drivers occupied the top five places for much of the race, as Sutton and Team BRISTOL STREET MOTORS' Tom Ingram jumped Team BMW's pole-sitter Colin Turkington in the early running.

The most successful trio on the grid – with nine BTCC Drivers' titles between them – ran nose-to-tail for much of the contest, with championship leader Jake Hill (Laser Tools Racing with MB Motorsport) and Josh Cook (LKQ Euro Car Parts with SYNETIQ) watching on from behind.

The standings looked set to be tightened yet further until the #80 Hyundai of Ingram began struggling with high rising engine temperature after a stone had punctured through his radiator. The 2022 champ lost out to the BMW duo of Turkington and Hill and he was soon retiring to the pitlane, with the EXCELR8 Motorsport squad now facing a race against time to replace the engine ahead of the finale.

Sutton held on from Turkington, Hill and Cook with Team BMW's Adam Morgan taking an important top five finish.

NAPA Racing UK's Dan Rowbottom produced a charging drive through the order to eventually displace TOYOTA GAZOO Racing UK's Rob Huff of sixth.

The Evans Halshaw Power Maxed Racing pair of Aron Taylor-Smith and Mikey Doble were ahead of NAPA Racing's Sam Osborne and Dan Cammish, and this quartet will now occupy the first two rows on the grid for the race three finale.

Hill leads the overall standings by nine points from Sutton, with Ingram a further seven points in arrears. Turkington, Cook and Cammish all remain in solid contention.

"This is the British Touring Car Championship and you’ve got to capitilise," said Sutton. "To be fair, we had our share of bad luck at Oulton Park – you never want to see your rivals go out with a problem but it just makes my life little bit easier.

"We’ve closed the points gap down to Jake [Hill] and it’s a mega result – it’s getting interesting… it’s the pointy end of the season isn’t it. I can’t thank NAPA Racing UK enough and everyone else involved."

Round 24 of the 2024 Kwik Fit British Touring Car Championship will take place at 1725 and will be screened LIVE on ITV4 and ITV Sport's TikTok channel.
