Speedworks Corolla Racing left Rounds 25, 26 & 27 of the 2026 Kwik Fit British Touring Car Championship at Silverstone with plenty of positives but also a sense of unfinished business after a weekend in which the team's early pace promised more than the final results ultimately delivered.
Having shown front-running pace earlier in the day, Josh Cook struggled with the balance of the Corolla in Qualifying as a combination of factors prevented him from reproducing the performance shown during practice. He eventually secured 12th on the grid.
Ryan Bensley, meanwhile, continued his impressive progress by qualifying directly behind his vastly more experienced teammate in 13th – a career-best BTCC qualifying result and another important milestone in his development.
Cook immediately set about recovering lost ground in Saturday's Qualifying Race. A determined drive saw him climb six positions to sixth, putting himself firmly back into contention ahead of Sunday's three championship encounters.
Bensley endured a more combative race, losing several positions after being hustled out of position, but the #7 responded strongly, recovering much of the lost ground and once again demonstrating encouraging race pace.
Cook began Sunday's opening race on the soft tyre and continued his charge towards the front, gaining two further positions to cross the line fourth, with the fastest lap of the race.
Bensley elected to run the medium tyre in the opening encounter. In the thick of a fiercely contested midfield battle throughout, he brought the Corolla home in 16th.
The tyre strategies were reversed for the second race, with Cook switching to the medium compound and Bensley moving onto the faster soft tyre. Cook battled hard as the differing tyre performance played out across the field, eventually taking the chequered flag in tenth.
Bensley's race proved more difficult. Despite showing encouraging underlying speed, a few unforeseen glitches contributed to a disrupted encounter and he eventually finished 19th.
Heavy rain transformed the conditions for the final race of the weekend and presented an entirely different challenge around the high-speed Silverstone National Circuit.
Cook once again moved forward, climbing from tenth to seventh in extremely difficult conditions to complete a weekend in which he had made significant progress from his original qualifying position.
For Bensley, the race represented another important experience in his rapidly developing BTCC career. Facing heavy rain and limited visibility in one of Britain's most competitive championships, he negotiated the conditions to move forward and finish 18th. A career-best qualifying result, strong underlying pace and valuable experience in vastly different conditions represented another significant step forward.
For Speedworks Corolla Racing, attention now switches firmly towards the season finale at Brands Hatch GP in two weeks (10/11 October).
Josh Cook, Driver, Speedworks Corolla Racing: "It's a frustrating one because the car felt really good at the start of the weekend and I genuinely thought we were in for a very strong Silverstone.
"Qualifying didn't go the way we expected and from that point onwards we were playing catch-up, but I think we showed good race pace and managed to keep moving forward.
"Going from 12th to sixth in the qualifying race put us back in the mix and we made another couple of places in the first race on Sunday. The medium tyre made Race Two more difficult, but we still came through it and then gained places again in some pretty challenging conditions in the final race.
"We know there's more performance there. The important thing now is understanding why we couldn't carry the pace from practice into qualifying and making sure we maximise everything at Brands Hatch.
Ryan Bensley, Driver, Speedworks Corolla Racing: "There's loads for me to take away from the weekend. Qualifying 13th was a really positive step and probably the biggest indication yet of the progress we're making. I felt comfortable in the car from practice onwards and the pace was really encouraging, particularly when you look at where we were compared to Josh.
"The races threw pretty much everything at me. There was some really hard racing in the midfield, we ran the medium tyre in Race One, had a few difficulties in Race Two and then Race Three was a complete baptism of fire in the rain!
"But that's exactly the experience I need. Every lap I'm learning more about the car, the championship and how you need to race at this level.
"I feel like I'm getting closer every weekend, and qualifying showed that. There's still plenty to learn, but I'm really looking forward to taking another step at Brands Hatch and ending the season strongly."
