Speedworks Corolla Racing 'excited' after strong home event at Oulton Park

23rd June 2026

With the 2026 Kwik Fit British Touring Car Championship now into its mid-season break, Speedworks Corolla Racing can reflect on an encouraging opening to the campaign, capped by a competitive home event at Oulton Park in early June, where Josh Cook secured his first podium of the season, and rookie Max Buxton produced a determined comeback drive after illness disrupted his preparations.

Cook's campaign has been a story of steady, building momentum. After finishing the opening Qualifying Race of the year in third, just 0.310 seconds behind the winner, his early-season pace was scuppered when a puncture on lap six of the first round took him out of second place. Undeterred, he has improved his best finish at every event since, a run of progress that culminated in a hard-earned Oulton Park podium, his strongest result of the campaign so far.

Competing less than 20 minutes from the team's Cheshire headquarters, the Oulton Park weekend always carries extra significance for everyone involved with Speedworks Corolla Racing. Strong support from partners, guests and fans helped create a fantastic atmosphere throughout the event, with the team keen to deliver a performance worthy of its home crowd.

Saturday's action began positively for Cook, who qualified second in his group before the combined results placed him fourth on the grid for the newly introduced Race to Pole contest. Demonstrating the pace that the Toyota Corolla GR Sport package has shown throughout the season, Cook fought his way forward to finish second and secure a front-row start for Sunday's opening race.

At the opposite side of the garage, Buxton was unfortunately forced to miss all Saturday running after being struck down by a virus, denying the BTCC rookie valuable track time around one of the championship's most demanding circuits. Despite the setback, Buxton returned to action on Sunday and immediately set about rebuilding his weekend.

Cook converted his front-row start into another outstanding result in race one, racing strongly throughout to secure second place and collect another valuable podium finish. The result reinforced both his own championship credentials and the continued competitiveness of the Speedworks Corolla Racing package.

Due to his success in race one, race two saw Cook switch onto the hard compound and, despite battling gamely throughout, he slipped back to 16th position as others benefitted from softer rubber. However, the decision set up an exciting final race, where Cook showcased superb race craft to climb from 16th to fifth, gaining eleven positions and once again demonstrating the pace and balance of the Corolla GR Sport.

For Buxton, Sunday's triple-header represented an impressive recovery effort after missing the entirety of Saturday's programme. Starting 21st in race one, the rookie worked his way forward to finish 18th before making further progress in race two to claim 16th position, narrowly missing out on the points-paying places. Running the hard tyre in the final encounter, Buxton again brought the car home in 16th and gathered valuable mileage, experience and confidence despite beginning the weekend on the sidelines.

With the break now heading to its midpoint, attention turns to the resumption at Thruxton (25/26 July), comfortably Cook's strongest venue on the BTCC calendar. The 35-year-old has taken double-digit victories at the Hampshire circuit across his career, ten of his wins coming there, seven more than at any other layout. With the Corolla GR Sport package having demonstrated impressive speed and consistency, Cook and the team will return determined to convert that evident potential into further silverware.

Christian Dick, Team Principal, Speedworks Corolla Racing, said: "Oulton Park is always a special weekend for us and I think everyone has left feeling proud of the effort and performance we showed across the event.

"Josh was superb throughout. Two top-three finishes, strong pace all weekend and a fantastic drive through the field in race three demonstrated exactly where we are as a team right now. We came away with a really strong points haul and there is plenty to be encouraged about.

"For Max, simply being back in the car on Sunday was an achievement in itself. Missing all of Saturday put him immediately on the back foot, but he dug deep, stayed focused and produced three mature drives. The experience he gained this weekend will be incredibly valuable.

"The whole team has worked exceptionally hard, and the chassis package is performing at a very high level. We're excited about what lies ahead."

Josh Cook, Driver, Speedworks Corolla Racing, said: "It was a solid weekend and one that yielded some important championship points.

"We showed strong pace from the outset and the car felt competitive throughout. Finishing second in the Race to Pole and then backing that up with another podium in race one was a good reward for the work the team has put in.

"Race two was always going to be challenging on the hard tyre, but we knew that going into it. To then come through from 16th to fifth in the final race was really enjoyable and showed the strength of the package.

"There are lots of positives we have taken away and hopefully we can keep building momentum heading into the next round."

Max Buxton, Driver, Speedworks Corolla Racing, said: "It certainly wasn't the weekend I expected after feeling unwell and missing all of Saturday, but I'm pleased with how we recovered.

"Missing qualifying and the Race to Pole made Sunday very difficult because you're immediately playing catch-up, but the team gave me a great car, and we kept making progress throughout the day.

"I felt more comfortable every race and there are lots of lessons I can take away. Considering the circumstances, completing all three races and moving forward was a positive outcome and something we can build on moving forward."
