For Round 22 of the 2023 Kwik Fit British Touring Car Championship we returned to Donington Park (26/27 August) – host of the opening rounds of the season. However, on this occasion the UK’s premier racing series debuted the GP layout for the first time since 2002.
After a strong showing in qualifying, Ash Sutton (NAPA Racing UK) claimed the top spot with Tom Ingram (BRISTOL STREET MOTORS with EXCELR8) and Ricky Collard (TOYOTA GAZOO Racing) lining up behind.
As the drizzly conditions looked to make the first race of the day more unpredictable, both Ingram and Collard pipped Sutton to the first corner demoting him to third. However, Sutton was able to gain one place back from Collard before the end of the first lap.
After an artful battle with Ingram, Sutton took the lead and charged to his first win of the race weekend.
Jake Hill (Laser Tools Racing with MB Motorsport) climbed his way up the order having qualified fifth by battling past his Team BMW stablemate Colin Turkington and Collard. A brilliant battle between Ingram and Hill took place on the final few corners however, a post-race penalty demoted Ingram to third.
Collard and Turkington took fourth and fifth respectively, whilst CarStore Power Maxed Racing’s Aron Taylor-Smith completed the top six.
Josh Cook (One Motorsport with Starline Racing), Dan Rowbottom (NAPA Racing UK), Andrew Watson (CarStore Power Maxed Racing) and Tom Chilton (BRISTOL STREET MOTORS with EXCELR8) rounded out the top ten positions.
"Getting past Tom [Ingram], I just wanted to make sure it was one hundred percent right before making the move," said Sutton. "We saw what we were missing last year, and we have really chased things like traction and looking after the tyres. We still had some performance in the car until the very end and that just proved that the guys and girls at NAPA Racing have done an incredible job."
