Record-breaker

21st May 2014

2014 has already been quite a year for record-breaking in the Dunlop MSA British Touring Car Championship. 31 NGTC specification cars, seven former champions, 11 marques and 14 different models of car have all made for a stellar start to the season, and qualifying day at Thruxton last time out was set to see another record tumble.

The fastest circuit visited by the BTCC, Thruxton carries with it unique challenges for the set-up of the cars, and also demands a great deal of the Dunlop tyres used in the championship. The qualifying lap record around its 2.36 mile ribbon of asphalt was set by touring car legend Yvan Muller behind the wheel of a works Vauxhall Astra way back in 2002, and conditions things hadn't all fallen into place for a driver to go faster in the 12 years since...

Muller's time of 1:16.369s came close to being toppled by Jordan in 2013 as he posted a 1:16.527s on his way to pole position, but the record stood for another season. It wasn’t until Jordan returned to Thruxton as reigning champion this season that the top time was finally surpassed. Perfect track conditions – cool air and a dry surface – helped Jordan to topple Muller’s time by more than two tenths of a second, although he just missed out on a sub-1:16s time...

Watch Jordan’s reaction to this record-breaking moment in the video below, as he talks through his on-the-limit lap with ITV’s Louise Goodman:
