MB Motorsport accelerated by Blue Square is delighted to welcome elite racing driver Andrew Watson to the team as its Hybrid Development Driver ahead of the Kwik Fit British Touring Car Championship’s switch to hybrid power in 2022.
With extensive experience in GT and endurance racing, Watson boasts an impressive CV which features victory in GT World Challenge Europe, a podium finish at the Bathurst 12 Hours and a fifth-place finish during his 24 Hours of Le Mans debut last year, while 2021 sees him undertake his second season in the FIA World Endurance Championship.
Bringing a wealth of varied technical knowledge to the team, Watson’s role will see him play a formal part in MB Motorsport accelerated by Blue Square’s testing ahead of hybrid's introduction into the 2022 Kwik Fit British Touring Car Championship. The 26-year-old will support the team in its efforts to hit the ground running in 2022 utilising new technology, and this will include a formal on-track programme towards the end of the year.
Away from his elite racing duties, Watson’s profession as a sustainability advisor sees him educate others on how to become more socially and environmentally responsible. Watson’s new role in the team is supported by his personal partnership with Howdens, an organisation which takes its environmental responsibilities seriously and is committed to reducing emissions and improving energy efficiency.
“I’m thrilled to be joining MB Motorsport accelerated by Blue Square as their Hybrid Development Driver,” said Watson. “This is a really important time for the series as we start to make the progression towards a more sustainable future, and it is a great step forward that the British Touring Car Championship is taking. I’ve been eager to get behind the wheel of a BTCC car for a while now, so this is a great opportunity and I owe my thanks to my partners at Howdens who were hugely supportive given the environmental steps forward that the series is taking.”
“It gives me great pleasure to welcome Andrew to the team,” added MB Motorsport accelerated by Blue Square’s Sporting Director, Mark Blundell. “He’s got great experience across some great organisations and championships which will be an asset to us as we look to hit the ground running with our 2022 preparations. We’re very excited about the changes coming up in the BTCC and are delighted to be working with Andrew to make sure we’re as prepared as we can be.”
