Donington set to determine BTCC title contenders

22nd August 2024

Pivotal weekend to take place on the spectacular Grand Prix circuit

Rounds 22, 23 and 24 of the 2024 Kwik Fit British Touring Car Championship will take place on the Donington Park Grand Prix circuit this weekend (24/25 August) with the closest title race in recent years set to reach boiling point.

Having taken a healthy lead in the standings at Croft following the mid-season break, Tom Ingram survived a damage limitation weekend at Knockhill last time out, with his advantage now cut down to just three points. The Team BRISTOL STREET MOTORS star leads Jake Hill (Laser Tools Racing with MB Motorsport), with reigning champion Ash Sutton (NAPA Racing UK) also close behind.

Dan Cammish (NAPA Racing UK), Colin Turkington (Team BMW) and Josh Cook (LKQ Euro Car Parts with SYNETIQ) make it a sextet of current contenders, but this talented trio will really need to make their move at Donington if they want to remain in the fight for the most coveted prize in British motorsport.

Once this weekend’s triple-header of contests is complete, there will be just six crucial races remaining with trips to Silverstone (21/22 September) and Brands Hatch (6/7 October) bringing down the curtain on what looks set to be a classic BTCC title race.

Donington Double

Heading back to the scene of the 2024 season curtain-raiser, championship leader Ingram will be confident following the pole position and double-victory that kicked off his impressive campaign so far. It’s the GP layout this time around of course, but a double podium here in 2023 suggests Ingram is likely to be in the mix again.

Aiden Moffat (LKQ Euro Car Parts with SYNETIQ) was the other driver to win on that opening weekend, and he’ll be eager to return to that very site once more after the Toyota Corolla GR Sport’s recent success. The Speedworks Motorsport run outfit has five victories to its name in 2024, tied with Ingram’s team in the Hyundai i30N and only behind the BMW 330e M Sport.

Of those BMW triumphs, Hill leads the way with six victories to his name, whilst it has been a very different year for current champion Sutton in the Ford Focus. The BTCC’s #1 sits only 20 points behind Ingram, despite having scored just one win in 2024, a stark contrast to his record-equalling 12 of a year ago.

This time last year the top six were covered by 119 points whereas this season the spread is only 56. With 201 points on offer for the remainder of the season, all is to play for in the run-in to take the crown.

TV, Timetable and Tickets

Rounds 22, 23 and 24 of the Kwik Fit British Touring Car Championship are anticipated to deliver thrilling races at Donington Park, along with myriad additional contests and entertainment options.

A variety of motorsport disciplines descend upon the historical circuit, including the Porsche Carrera Cup Great Britain and the future of single-seater talent in the shape of the British F4 Championship. The MINI CHALLENGE will also be on-track, whilst the Porsche Sprint Cup Great Britain also returns to the bill.

There’s no denying the headline act of course and that is the BTCC and its triple-header of races. To be there, visit https://www.donington-park.co.uk/2024/august/btcc
