Two of the finest eras of British Touring Car Championship racing meet at Oulton Park this weekend (7/8 June), which has sent the pulses racing ahead of one of the most anticipated events of the year.
Super Touring cars of the 1990s will be back on the TOCA bill for the first time since their original heyday as the newly formed Super Touring Car Championship supports the headlining BTCC at the famous Cheshire venue.
The move certainly excited our friends at AUTOCAR who joined us at the recent Silverstone Classic Media Day when we decided to put two Hondas from the two famous eras on the circuit at the same time - the 2000 Accord and 2014 Civic Tourer.
Matt Neal was on hand to drive the cars and give journalist Mark Tisshaw the full lowdown, and the result is an epic feature in this week’s AUTOCAR magazine, which was released today.
“Given the strength of these two BTCC eras, the question is always going to be asked: which one is better?” reports Tisshaw. “It’s easy to be nostalgic, but with the racing so competitive and the show around it as strong as ever, why look back when you can enjoy the present? For this weekend, BTCC fans of present and past can have their cake and eat it, too, watching the two eras side by side.”
Neal gives his opinion on the racing from both eras too and take it from a veteran (sorry Matt!) of more than 500 races – the 2014 Dunlop MSA British Touring Car Championship is the most competitive it has ever been during his time in the series.
To continue with the fever ahead of the weekend we’ll be putting reigning champion Andrew Jordan in an ex-Jeff Allam 1994 Vauxhall Cavalier at Oulton Park later this afternoon (Wednesday), which will be his first ever run in a Super Touring car.
So make sure you purchase this week’s AUTOCAR magazine and it goes without saying that you need to get your backside trackside this weekend to see history in the making at Oulton Park.
