Teams' Championship: NAPA Racing UK complete hat-trick

9th October 2024

NAPA Racing UK came into the 2024 campaign looking to continue its feat of winning every BTCC Teams' Championship it has competed for. Even with the likes of Team BRISTOL STREET MOTORS and Team BMW looking to try to take the crown away, it would be an impressive season for the Ford Focus squad.

Not only did the Northamptonshire-based outfit complete three championship successes in a row, but the team did so without relinquishing first place at any point in the season. Here is how the 2024 Teams' Championship unfolded…

Donington Park National - Rounds 1-2-3

NAPA Racing UK started 2024 as it ended 2023, at the very top. In fact across the opening three races the Alliance Racing-run outfit were only outscored by one team in the final race of the weekend. That team was the Toyotas of LKQ Euro Car Parts with SYNETIQ who, after Aiden Moffat's win in race three, came away from the weekend second in the standings.

Despite having won two of the three races overall, Team BRISTOL STREET MOTORS came away from Donington Park third in the Teams' standings. Team BMW were narrowly behind as the top four were split by 13 points leaving the first weekend of the season.

Laser Tools Racing with MB Motorsport left the first round as the highest team to field one car with Jake Hill. Not only doing that but finishing above three teams of two-car entries behind. TOYOTA GAZOO Racing UK would finish ahead of Evans Halshaw Power Maxed Racing by two points with the two new teams to the championship closing out the order.

Teams' Championship Standings - Event 1

- NAPA Racing UK - 756 - TOYOTA GAZOO Racing UK - 34
2 - LKQ Euro Car Parts with SYNETIQ - 68- Evans Halshaw Power Maxed Racing - 32
3 - Team BRISTOL STREET MOTORS - 658 - Restart Racing - 8
4 - Team BMW - 62- Duckhams Racing with Bartercard - 6
5 - Laser Tools Racing with MB Motorsport - 41

Brands Hatch Indy - Rounds 4-5-6

Another weekend with no wins did not hurt NAPA Racing UK in the slightest as it continued to top the standings by ten points. Team BMW jumped from fourth to second after two wins for Colin Turkington, but still tied on points with Team BRISTOL STREET MOTORS, who remained in third place after another win of its own.

Despite outscoring all of the teams above them in race one, LKQ Euro Car Parts with SYNETIQ's remaining races were not as successful dropping the team to fourth. In fifth place we saw a jump in form from Evans Halshaw Power Maxed Racing, climbing up two places with increasingly better results across all three races.

TOYOTA GAZOO Racing UK held its sixth place from the first event, leapfrogging Laser Tools Racing with MB Motorsport after Hill had a non-scoring race two. Restart Racing remained ahead of Duckhams Racing with Bartercard, with the latter also feeling the effect of a non-scoring round with running one car.

Teams' Championship Standings - Event 2

1 - NAPA Racing UK - 1466 - TOYOTA GAZOO Racing UK - 74
2 - Team BMW - 1367 - Laser Tools Racing with MB Motorsport - 60
3 - Team BRISTOL STREET MOTORS - 1368 - Restart Racing - 26
4 - LKQ Euro Car Parts with SYNETIQ - 1139 - Duckhams Racing with Bartercard - 13
5 - Evans Halshaw Power Maxed Racing - 77

Snetterton - Rounds 7-8-9

The changeable conditions of Snetterton proved to be a shake up again, but not at the top. NAPA Racing UK continued to top the standings despite still not winning a single race overall at the opening three events. The team even grew its advantage over Team BRISTOL STREET MOTORS, which jumped into second.

LKQ Euro Car Parts with SYNETIQ outscored all teams in races two and three to rise up the standings, but neither gained nor lost points to the top spot. Team BMW fell two places to fourth as the positions behind the leaders continued to change after every round.

The fight for fifth changed for the third round running with TOYOTA GAZOO Racing UK getting the better of Evans Halshaw Power Maxed Racing in Norfolk. Even after winning races one and two, Laser Tools Racing with MB Motorsport did not climb any places, but continue to be the top-placed one-car outfit.

Teams' Championship Standings - Event 3

1 - NAPA Racing UK - 2056 - Evans Halshaw Power Maxed Racing - 114
2 - Team BRISTOL STREET MOTORS - 1847 - Laser Tools Racing with MB Motorsport - 107
3 - LKQ Euro Car Parts with SYNETIQ - 1728 - Restart Racing - 37
4 - Team BMW - 1699 - Zeus Cloud Racing with WSR - 34
5 - TOYOTA GAZOO Racing UK - 12610 - Duckhams Racing with Bartercard - 26

Thruxton - Rounds 10-11-12

The fastest circuit in the country is the event where NAPA Racing UK really stretched its legs. Not only getting a first overall win of the year, the team also walked away with a 99-point weekend having the highest scoring event of any team so far this season.

Team BRISTOL STREET MOTORS continued to hold on to second place as Team BMW and LKQ Euro Car Parts with SYNETIQ once again traded places for third and fourth. The gap between second to fourth was less than half the gap from first to second.

Laser Tools Racing with MB Motorsport climbed back up to fifth, with Hill winning races one and two. The midfield left Thruxton in a tight battle as the fifth-placed team led TOYOTA GAZOO Racing UK by four points, with Evans Halshaw Power Maxed Racing a further point behind.

3 - Team BMW - 2278 - Restart Racing - 49
- LKQ Euro Car Parts with SYNETIQ - 2159 - Zeus Cloud Racing with WSR - 34
5 - Laser Tools Racing with MB Motorsport - 15410 - Duckhams Racing with Bartercard - 29

Oulton Park - Rounds 13-14-15

Team BRISTOL STREET MOTORS could not put a dent into NAPA Racing UK's lead heading into the halfway mark of the season, as the gap remained the same as it did after Thruxton. The championship leaders outscored the EXCELR8-run outfit by two points in race one before the latter gained a point back in each subsequent race.

Josh Cook helped LKQ Euro Car Parts with SYNETIQ in retaking third place with a race win in race two, whilst Team BMW fell back behind the Toyota Corollas by two points.

Despite a win for Hill and Laser Tools Racing with MB Motorsport, the double podium for Evans Halshaw Power Maxed Racing in the same race would see the team jump two places to fifth, with the former now in sixth. TOYOTA GAZOO Racing UK would be outscored by both teams ahead of them in every race to hit the mid-season mark in seventh.

Restart Racing along with NAPA Racing UK are the only two teams to remain in the same position at every round as the BTCC newcomers would stay in eighth. In ninth would once again be Duckhams Racing with Bartercard, placing them as the second-placed team running one car.

Teams' Championship Standings - Event 5

1 - NAPA Racing UK - 3646 - Laser Tools Racing with MB Motorsport - 204
2 - Team BRISTOL STREET MOTORS - 303- TOYOTA GAZOO Racing UK - 186

4 - Team BMW - 2649 - Duckhams Racing with Bartercard - 41
5 - Evans Halshaw Power Maxed Racing - 22010 - Zeus Cloud Racing with WSR - 34

Croft - Rounds 16-17-18

NAPA Racing UK entered the second half of the season having a 61 point lead over nearest rivals Team BRISTOL STREET MOTORS. That gap began to grow after the first bout at Croft as the championship leaders scored more points than any other team in the BTCC’s return to on track action.

Despite the early race day form, the second-placed team would ever so slightly cut the gap to 60 points as they left the North Yorkshire circuit. This could not be said for other teams as their gap to the frontrunners grew with LKQ Euro Car Parts with SYNETIQ maintaining third place narrowly ahead of Team BMW.

The only change in the order post-summer break would come in the form of TOYOTA GAZOO Racing UK leapfrogging Laser Tools Racing with MB Motorsport. Behind the first two teams, the points were spread relatively evenly with the Josh Cook and Aiden Moffat-driven team scoring 47 with both Team BMW and the duo of fast-charging Toyotas of Rob Huff and Andrew Watson scoring 46.

Teams’ Championship - Event 6

1 - NAPA Racing UK - 446- TOYOTA GAZOO Racing UK - 232
2 - Team BRISTOL STREET MOTORS - 3867 - Laser Tools Racing with MB Motorsport - 227

4 - Team BMW - 310- Duckhams Racing with Un-Limited Motorsport - 47
5 - Evans Halshaw Power Maxed Racing - 26310 - Zeus Cloud Racing with WSR - 34

Knockhill - Rounds 19-20-21

It would be the fourth placed team, driven by Colin Turkington and Adam Morgan, that would go on to score the most points as the paddock headed to Scotland. Scoring 35 points in the opening race of the day, the Team BMW pair would equal the most points scored by a team in one race during the second half of the season. Team BRISTOL STREET MOTORS managed the feat in race three at Croft.

NAPA Racing UK would further extend their lead over the Hyundai i30N-driven second place team despite being outscored by ten points in the final contest of the day. Turkington and Morgan’s efforts would see them be the only team to gain a position in the standings after Knockhill.

Huff and Watson would continue to close in on Evans Halshaw Power Maxed Racing ahead; whilst only gaining one point on the second BMW 330e M Sport entry piloted by Jake Hill. Restart Racing would continue to open the gap between themselves and Duckhams Racing with Un-Limited Motorsport by scoring, at the fife-based circuit alone, double the points of the latter over the previous two events.

Teams’ Championship - Event 7

- NAPA Racing UK - 5096 - TOYOTA GAZOO Racing UK - 275
- Team BRISTOL STREET MOTORS - 4377 - Laser Tools Racing with MB Motorsport - 269

Donington Park GP - Rounds 22-23-24

Returning for the second year in a row and for only the second time in 22 years, the BTCC headed to the Donington Park GP circuit as Team BMW made it two events from two as the highest scoring team.

Despite their efforts to chip away at the lead of NAPA Racing UK, Team BRISTOL STREET MOTORS would again fall back to allow the Ford Focus ST-driven outfit to extend their championship lead to over 100 points.

LKQ Euro Car Parts with SYNETIQ, ahead of Turkington and Morgan’s BMWs at the halfway point of the season, now sit 45 points behind the WSR-run team after a rich run of form for Turkington and Morgan. In more BMW and Toyota battles, Laser Tools Racing with MB Motorsport had once again jumped ahead of TOYOTA GAZOO Racing UK by one point to put a duo of two-car teams behind them with two events remaining.

Teams’ Championship - Event 8

5 - Evans Halshaw Power Maxed Racing - 34910 - Zeus Cloud Racing with WSR - 34

Silverstone - Rounds 25-26-27

After Team BMW initiated a charge as the highest-scoring team over the previous two events, NAPA Racing UK arrived at Silverstone ready to show its prowess at the top of the table by outscoring every other team across the weekend.

Despite being outscored in each of the first two races, the initial being Team BRISTOL STREET MOTORS and the latter being both BMW-driven teams, the Northamptonshire-based outfit continued with its season-long consistency. The championship leaders walked away from Silverstone with the exact number of points on offer at the final round, meaning one point would complete their hat-trick of title victories.

The order throughout the field had not changed from the previous event with the standout performance coming from the one-car entry of Laser Tools Racing with MB Motorsport. The WSR-run team once again pulled away from TOYOTA GAZOO Racing UK placing two, two-car teams between themselves and the nearest single-car outfit.

- LKQ Euro Car Parts with SYNETIQ - 4579 - Duckhams Racing with Un-Limited Motorsport - 70
5 - Evans Halshaw Power Maxed Racing - 38310 - Zeus Cloud Racing with WSR - 34

Brands Hatch GP - Rounds 28-29-30

Despite being 15 points down on the day heading into the final rounds of the season, NAPA Racing UK still walked away having grown its advantage, as well as taking the Teams' crown for the third season running. On the way to doing so, the team took the highest-scoring round of the weekend by any team in race three.

Team BRISTOL STREET MOTORS defended second spot, also growing the gap to the team behind. Team BMW had a strong push after the mid-season break, allowing the jump into third but left themselves short with one-car scores in the opening two races.

Evans Halshaw Power Maxed Racing had a successful 2024, beating teams that were not of the same independent status as themselves. Brands Hatch continued to be impressive as the Astra-racing team closed in on fourth placed LKQ Euro Car Parts with SYNETIQ.

Laser Tools Racing with MB Motorsport took ten points out of the gap to the top half of the table, as its impressive one-car campaign came to a close. New teams – Restart Racing and Duckhams Racing with Un-Limited Motorsport – continued to impress with both having a higher scoring second half of the year to the first.
