The 2022 Kwik Fit British Touring Car Championship produced one of the most unpredictable Drivers’ Championship battles in recent memory, with three title contenders entering the finale with just seven points separating them. Bristol Street Motors with EXCELR8 TradePriceCars.com's Tom Ingram topped the tables, claiming his maiden championship win and showing brilliant control and composure throughout the campaign. The 29-year-old exceeded his 2021 points tally by 94, increasing his championship position by three places to clinch the title.
Notably, the only driver with a larger points difference was NAPA Racing UK's Dan Cammish, who increased his score by 177 points. However, the NAPA Racing UK driver only competed in one event in 2021 – an impressive one-off stint with BTC Racing at Thruxton – meaning his points increase is not reasonably comparable between the two seasons.
Another driver who showed impressive form in 2022 was ROKiT MB Motorsport man Jake Hill. The BMW 330e M Sport driver improved his points tally by 86 and elevated his standings position by two places after his strongest campaign to date.
While Ash Sutton and Colin Turkington did lose out in the championship positions, both drivers sizeably increased their points share, demonstrating just how hard-fought the 2022 BTCC turned out to be.
Toyota GAZOO Racing UK's Rory Butcher rounded out the top five, also significantly improving on his performance last year with an additional 76 points and a two-place advancement in the final standings.
Dan Lloyd takes the title for most consistent, with a steady increase of two points and one position this season, while Car Gods with Ciceley Motorsport man Adam Morgan improved his championship standing by four spots, the second-largest increase in the top ten.
Comparing the scores overall, it is evident that the level of competition at the top of the table was even higher this year, with the top three drivers of 2022 amassing a total of 1157 points, while this figure previously was just 952. Similarly, only the top three drivers surpassed 300 points in 2021, while five did in 2022, with three pushing towards 400.
