Max Buxton made a welcome return to the points at Silverstone this past weekend (20/21 September) as the TOYOTA GAZOO Racing UK with IAA driver enjoyed his best showing to date in the Kwik Fit British Touring Car Championship.
Taking centre stage at the penultimate event of the season, Buxton underlined his status as one of the series’ rising stars by tallying a hat-trick of competitive finishes in his Speedworks Motorsport-prepared Toyota Corolla GR Sport.
Going into the 20-year-old’s fourth meeting of the year, having had the benefit of conducting a productive test day with team-mate Josh Cook at Snetterton, the BTCC newcomer demonstrated his upward trajectory by recording his highest qualifying of the season, securing a starting spot of 16th on the grid for race one.
Buxton kicked off his Sunday at the world-famous Northamptonshire track with a measured drive in race one. In the thick of the action in the early exchanges, the third-generation driver initially lost ground; however, he wasted no time in battling his way back to take the chequered flag in the position in which he had started.
The highlight of Buxton’s weekend around the National layout would come in race two as he produced a brilliant drive to tally his second points finish of the campaign. The Lancastrian had his elbows out from the get-go as he became embroiled in a number of captivating close-quarter duels - each of which he came out on top of as he worked his way up the field to finish in 13th.
Buoyed by making a welcome return to the points, Buxton went into the weekend’s final encounter looking to double up for the day; however, a difficult second half to the race on the soft tyre would ultimately see him cross the line in 19th following a track limits time penalty.
Max Buxton: “Overall it has been a really strong weekend so to be going home thinking that we could have potentially come away with a little bit more is a testament to just how far we’ve come over these past few events.
“The test at Snetterton was hugely beneficial and I like we had a good balance in the car during practice. We were ultimately a little caught out by the changing conditions in qualifying otherwise I think making it into Part 2 for the first time was potentially on the cards.
“Race one we had some good battles and then to break back into the points in race two was a great feeling - one place higher and we might have been on pole for race three. We then ended the day struggling a little bit towards the end of race three on the soft tyre but we still learnt a huge amount.
“On the whole I feel like I’ve made another step forward both as a driver and with the car so we’re heading to Brands Hatch next month in a good place; we’ll go there with the aim of signing off the season on a high.”
The Kwik Fit British Touring Car Championship closes out its 2025 season around the Brands Hatch Grand Prix circuit on the 4-5 October.
