Chris Smiley and a number of the Kwik Fit British Touring Car Championship's stars and cars set a blistering pace in second free practice session of the weekend, as lap times dipped into the 1m 14s bracket at Thruxton for the first time in history.
Cool conditions can often help when it comes to ultimate lap time at the high-speed Hampshire circuit and so it proved as the top four drivers were eventually separated by just 0.071s.
Team VERTU's Tom Ingram joined Smiley in the 1m 14s with the leading duo covered by an incredible 0.008s.
Charles Rainford (LKQ Euro Car Parts Racing with WSR) and Dan Cammish (NAPA Racing UK) were similarly blanketed by 0.010s in the fight for third and fourth, suggesting we could have an incredible qualifying session ahead this afternoon.
FP1 pace-setter Ash Sutton was fifth in his NAPA Racing UK Ford Focus, whilst Senna Proctor was impressively sixth on his return to the championship.
Team VERTU's Proctor last raced in the BTCC back in 2021, but the Yorkshireman has taken a couple of podiums here previously at Thruxton, albeit in Vauxhall and Honda machinery. Now with the potent Hyundai i30N at his disposal, which he also previously drove in 2020, it will be interesting to see how the #18 fares this weekend.
Dan Lloyd ensured both Restart Racing Hyundais were well inside the top ten, whilst Adam Morgan was eighth in his similar Team VERTU i30N.
Aron Taylor-Smith (TOYOTA GAZOO Racing UK with IAA) and Jake Hill (Laser Tools Racing with MB Motorsport) completed the top ten positions.
The session passed without incident although Motor Parts Direct with Power Maxed Racing's Nick Halstead has withdrawn from the remainder of the day, as he is currently having a rib injury assessed at a nearby hospital.
Qualifying for Round 10 of the 2025 Kwik Fit British Touring Car Championship commences at 1500 and will be streamed live on the ITV Sport YouTube channel.
