A convoy and parade of world famous race cars will be driven across the Forth Road Bridge next week (21 August) in a triple celebration ahead of the Dunlop MSA British Touring Car Championship event at Knockhill.
Led by our 2014 Scottish contingent the event kicks off the BTCC’s annual visit north of the border, but will also mark the 50th Anniversary of the Forth Road Bridge and at the same time pay homage to Jim Clark’s famous BTCC title win back in 1964.
The parade will primarily act as a special preview to the Homecoming Scotland 2014 – Knockhill 40th Anniversary – Dunlop MSA British Touring Car Championship DPS Group Raceday, which will take place at Knockhill on Sunday 24th August.
The four Scottish based BTCC drivers – Gordon Shedden, Dave Newsham, Glynn Geddie and Aiden Moffat will cross the bridge in their 2014 race cars. Joining the current stars will be double BTCC Champion, John Cleland, who will take the wheel of an iconic Jim Clark machine.
“When they asked me if I would drive a Clark car, I jumped at the chance; as Jim was a real racing hero of mine,” said a delighted Cleland. “He was such a gent and legend of the racing world, and came from only a few miles from where I live in the Borders.
“I couldn’t pass up the chance to drive Jim’s first race car across the Forth Road Bridge; that’s not an offer that is likely to ever come around again.”
Regarded as one of the greatest drivers of all time, Clark incredibly won his BTCC title 50 years ago while he was also the reigning Formula One World Champion! Up to six of Clark’s race cars will be on display next week before also being driven across the bridge alongside the BTCC’s modern flame-spitting tin tops.
At the Bridge, the cars will be on display from 9.30am at the South car park, and then be driven across the Bridge at 11am. Alongside the 2014 Honda Civic Tourer, Ford Focus, Chevrolet Cruze and Toyota Avensis will be a host of Clark’s machines, including two of Jim’s Formula One and Tasmin Championship single seaters, two iconic Lotus Cortinas and Jim’s first race car, a DKW.
All the cars will be driven across the Forth Road Bridge before heading to Knockhill Racing Circuit to form a special feature at the track’s BTCC event on 23/24 August.
The special Forth Road Bridge crossing is free to attend, and tickets for the subsequent BTCC event at Knockhill can be purchased via the Knockhill Events webpage, with pre-booked tickets all subject to advanced booking discounts. Alternatively, tickets can be purchased at Knockhill throughout the BTCC event at the gate.
Knockhill are donating 20% of ticket sales using the code JIMCLARK50 to the Jim Clark Trust who are aiming to extend the Jim Clark Room in Duns in 2018.
