Team VERTU's Adam Morgan narrowly squeezed ahead of FP1 pacesetter Daryl DeLeon as the experienced Hyundai driver topped the final Kwik Fit British Touring Car Championship practice session at Silverstone.
Morgan's time blew away DeLeon's early morning effort, with the latter also improving in the second session as he trailed Morgan by just 0.070s.
The leading duo were more than two tenths quicker than the chasing pack, which is actually quite a significant margin around the 1.64-mile National circuit.
Morgan's 56.596s time is now the fastest BTCC lap ever at Silverstone while a phenomenal 16 cars dipped under Dan Cammish's 2020 qualifying lap record, which he achieved in a Team Dynamics-run Honda Civic Type R.
Tom Chilton was best of the rest in third, with the Team VERTU star fresh from his Donington Park pole position and victory last time out.
Restart Racing's Dan Lloyd was fourth as the Huddersfield racer continues his charge in the Independents' title race, whilst reigning champion Jake Hill was fifth in the #1 Laser Tools Racing with MB Motorsport BMW.
The LKQ Euro Car Parts Racing with WSR duo of Aiden Moffat and Charles Rainford again proved inseparable, as they were in FP1, with the pair lining up sixth and seventh.
The top ten was rounded out by a trio of TOYOTA GAZOO Racing UK with IAA cars with Gordon Shedden heading Josh Cook and Árón Taylor-Smith.
Title contenders – Tom Ingram (Team VERTU) and Ash Sutton (NAPA Racing UK) – were 12th and 17th respectively with the pair still clearly honing their cars ahead of the all-important qualifying session.
That qualifying session takes place at 1530 and will be streamed LIVE via the ITV Sport YouTube channel.
