WSR aim for more success on Donington return

29th August 2025

WSR continues its Kwik Fit British Touring Car Championship campaign at Donington Park this weekend determined to continue its recent upturn in form.

The 2024 double champions enjoyed a spectacular event at Knockhill recently with Charles Rainford leading a BMW 330i M Sport one-two-three in qualifying and Jake Hill scoring a double race win on his return to the cockpit from illness.

Now they face the challenge of the 2.49-mile Grand Prix layout at the East Midlands venue where 12 months ago the 18-time title-winners secured a race victory and four podium finishes.

Hill, the star of Knockhill, won twice and outscored all his rivals last time out aboard his WSR-run Laser Tools Racing with MB Motorsport BMW, in what was an incredible comeback by the 2024 champion, who withdrew from the previous event at Croft through illness.

The Kent ace was a double podium-finisher on the GP circuit at Donington last year and has high targets for the weekend as he aims to improve on his current fifth place in the championship standings.

LKQ Euro Car Parts Racing with WSR driver Aiden Moffat claimed his best result of the season – fifth – on the shorter Donington layout in April, but the Scottish star has been on good form recently and achieved his biggest points haul of 2025 at Knockhill.

His team-mate, Rainford, scored his first BTCC pole position for LKQ Euro Car Parts Racing with WSR and delivered a second-place finish in the opening race.

The Sussex racer was also the highest-scoring Jack Sears Trophy driver in Scotland and is now just one point behind fellow WSR driver Daryl DeLeon in the battle for the prize with nine races remaining.

Nobody has taken more Jack Sears Trophy race wins than DeLeon’s five in 2025, but due to misfortune in race three at each of the past two events, the BTCC’s only Filipino race winner saw his advantage over Rainford in the battle for the title severely trimmed.

Cambridgeshire-based DeLeon has fond memories of his visit to the longer Donington layout last year as it was the scene of his first top-10 finish in the BTCC.

Jake Hill, Laser Tools Racing with MB Motorsport: “After the brilliant weekend we had at Knockhill, we are all raring to get going at Donington Park. Getting to race on the GP configuration is always a welcome addition, and we have gone well here in the past with four podiums under our belt. We had a successful weekend in Scotland, so carrying over the momentum as we enter the closing stages of the season will be key as we look to finish the season strongly.”

Charles Rainford, LKQ Euro Car Parts Racing with WSR: “I’m right back where my BTCC career started in April, but this time on the longer layout, which should be better for the BMW with the two hairpins that should allow us to maximise the benefit of the traction our rear-wheel-drive gives us at low speeds. A lot has happened since we were last here; my first win at Brands Hatch and my first pole last time out at Knockhill, and that’s helped improve my championship position and pull me right up to Daryl in the Jack Sears Trophy battle. I’m looking forward to the weekend a lot.”

Aiden Moffat, LKQ Euro Car Parts Racing with WSR: “We’re back at Donington, where I had my best result of the year so far on the shorter version of the track back in April. There’s a positive to take from that, but even more so from the improvements we’ve shown since the summer break. We were on for a podium at Croft before I was hit by another driver and at Knockhill we showed consistent pace all weekend, starting and finishing inside the top 10 in all three races. I hope we can continue that upward trend this weekend.”

Daryl DeLeon, WSR: “We’ve had great pace over the past few weekends, as my front-row qualifying result at Knockhill and my Croft podium showed, but haven’t capitalised points-wise due to a technical issue in Scotland and being wiped out by another car in Race Three at Croft. Because of that the Jack Sears Trophy battle with my team-mate Charles is much closer than I’d hoped it would be, but that just means I have to knuckle down and make sure I take every position I possibly can. I got my first top-10 finish in the BTCC on the long track here last year so there’s definitely some good memories to take into the weekend.”

Dick Bennetts, Team Principal: “We’ve shown much improved form since the summer break for a number of reasons and we’re now in a situation where it seems that the BMW can match some of the front-wheel drive cars on different types of circuit. The long layout means we’ll have fewer laps in qualifying and that could play against us with how we have to warm our tyres, but we’ll do whatever we can to try and maintain our race-winning speed from Knockhill at a circuit where we won last year.”
