Ciceley Motorsport announces BTCC departure

After ten years as a front-running Independent team in Britain’s premier motorsport series, Ciceley Motorsport has today (28 November) announced that the 2022 Kwik Fit British Touring Car Championship marks its final campaign as the team takes a new direction in motorsport for 2023.

Team Owner Russell Morgan has made the difficult decision to end the Lancashire-based family outfit’s time in the BTCC and instead focus on new challenges in historic motorsport.

Russell, whose son Adam has been responsible for all but one of the squad’s BTCC victories, said: “It’s been an incredible journey. It was a very emotional decision for me to call time on the team in its current form as Adam and I have raced as ‘dad and lad’ since he was seven years old. I am incredibly proud of what we have achieved at Ciceley Motorsport, initially from my garage at home and later having grown into a professional race car team competing at the very highest level in the UK. Now is the time for a change, however.”

Adam, who finished second in the 2022 BTCC Independents’ Championship, said: “I’m very happy, yet sad at the same time. Most of the team has been with us since the beginning of my career in 2010. We have definitely had many more ups than downs and shared some amazing experiences together, but the time has come for a change. It’s not the end though. The Ciceley name will live on in historic racing and I fully intend to continue competing at the highest level of UK motorsport, so you can expect news on my plans in the very near future.

“On a personal level, I have a two-year-old whirlwind of a son and eight-month-old twins, so I owe my amazing wife, Caroline, more time at home. Running a team is a full-time job and Caroline has more than a full-time job looking after the ‘ankle biters’. Professionally, I owe the lads in the team so much. They have been outstanding and always given 110 per cent. I also have to thank every partner that turned our BTCC journey into one big adventure that resulted in 12 wins, 39 podium finishes, a pole position and 15 fastest laps.  It would take hours to name everybody, but particular thanks are due to our amazing title sponsors in Wix Filters, Mac Tools, Carlube Triple R and Car Gods. I am so grateful to every single person that has supported and believed in us, financially or otherwise.”

Russell commented: “I can only reiterate Adam’s feelings regarding every single person that has been associated with the team in whatever capacity. We have been so lucky to be surrounded and supported by such fantastic people and neither of us will ever forget the graft, generosity and belief shown to all of us at Ciceley Motorsport. We do have some news to deliver, we love a bit of racing ‘us lads.”

Both Morgans finished by adding; “A genuine and heartfelt thanks to everybody that has been involved in Ciceley Motorsport. We look forward to seeing you all again very soon, it’s been a life-changing, epic, fun-filled adventure.”

SEASON COMPARISON: 2021 VS 2022

The 2022 Kwik Fit British Touring Car Championship produced one of the most unpredictable Drivers’ Championship battles in recent memory, with three title contenders entering the finale with just seven points separating them. Read on and check out the infographic below to find out how the Drivers' Standings top ten's 2022 campaign compares with their 2021 performance...

Bristol Street Motors with EXCELR8 TradePriceCars.com's Tom Ingram topped the tables, claiming his maiden championship win and showing brilliant control and composure throughout the campaign. The 29-year-old exceeded his 2021 points tally by 94, increasing his championship position by three places to clinch the title.

Notably, the only driver with a larger points difference was NAPA Racing UK's Dan Cammish, who increased his score by 177 points. However, the NAPA Racing UK driver only competed in one event in 2021 – an impressive one-off stint with BTC Racing at Thruxton – meaning his points increase is not reasonably comparable between the two seasons.

Another driver who showed impressive form in 2022 was ROKiT MB Motorsport man Jake Hill. The BMW 330e M Sport driver improved his points tally by 86 and elevated his standings position by two places after his strongest campaign to date.

While Ash Sutton and Colin Turkington did lose out in the championship positions, both drivers sizeably increased their points share, demonstrating just how hard-fought the 2022 BTCC turned out to be.

Toyota GAZOO Racing UK's Rory Butcher rounded out the top five, also significantly improving on his performance last year with an additional 76 points and a two-place advancement in the final standings.

Dan Lloyd takes the title for most consistent, with a steady increase of two points and one position this season, while Car Gods with Ciceley Motorsport man Adam Morgan improved his championship standing by four spots, the second-largest increase in the top ten.

Comparing the scores overall, it is evident that the level of competition at the top of the table was even higher this year, with the top three drivers of 2022 amassing a total of 1157 points, while this figure previously was just 952. Similarly, only the top three drivers surpassed 300 points in 2021, while five did in 2022, with three pushing towards 400.

BTCC Livery World Cup 2022: Latest updates

With the BTCC Livery World Cup 2022 Quarter Finals kicking off tomorrow, we're recapping how the voting has unfolded so far and looking at which liveries you've put through to the next round!

Day one of the knockout stage saw NAPA Racing UK go head-to-head with Halfords Racing with Cataclean to kick off the competition. The Motorbase Performance-run squad’s striking blue and yellow livery proved popular as NAPA Racing UK came out on top.

Then, it was the turn of Car Gods with Ciceley Motorsport and Bristol Street Motors with EXCELR8 TradePriceCars.com to lock horns for a place in the Quarter Finals. While the competition was fierce, it was the Hyundai outfit that took the victory, moving into the next stage of voting.

Next up came a close battle between ROKiT MB Motorsport and Uptonsteel with Euro Car Parts Racing. While the former came out on top of the Instagram votes, victory on Twitter for the Infiniti saw it come down to the wire, and it was Rick Parfitt's brightly-coloured machine that held a narrow 20-vote advantage and progressed to the Quarter Finals.

On Thursday, we saw another Infiniti take the win, as fans chose between the Laser Tools Racing machines and CarStore Power Maxed Racing's Vauxhall Astras.

Rounding off the first week of voting, Team BMW and Rich Energy BTC Racing went head-to-head on Friday as the BMW 330e M Sports and Honda Civic Type Rs battled for a place in the next stage. Although Rich Energy BTC Racing dominated the vote on Twitter, once again Instagram's vote threw a different result, and the culmination of both tallies saw the WSR-run outfit take the honours.

Kicking off Monday morning, it was Toyota GAZOO Racing UK and Autobrite Direct with JourneyHero's turn to face the vote. Despite a close start, the iconic red, white and black livery of the Toyota GAZOO Racing UK machines ultimately took the win.

In the penultimate face-off of round 1, we saw Yazoo with Safuu.com Racing lock horns with Apec Racing with Beavis Morgan's season finale livery. While the Yazoo-adorned Cupras accumulated a strong tally, it was the NASCAR-inspired livery of Apec Racing with Beavis Morgan that took the popular vote.

Today marks the final vote of the first round of the BTCC Livery World Cup 2022, and it's the turn of the two wildcard liveries...

BTCC 2022: ACCOLADE TRACKER

Who were the drivers to be reckoned with during the 2022 Kwik Fit British Touring Car Championship? Our Accolade Tracker reveals all – with every driver who’s achieved a podium, pole position, fastest lap or point for leading a lap included.

While eventual champion Tom Ingram is expectedly ahead of the rest on the tracker, interestingly, runner-up Ash Sutton and fifth-placed Rory Butcher both have noticeably fewer accolades to their names in 2022 than some of the rivals they outscored in the overall title battle, highlighting their consistent points-finishes throughout the 30 rounds.

An impressive six victories for Ingram clearly solidified his maiden championship, while Jake Hill's nine second-place finishes trumps the rest of the grid's tallies during the campaign.

Ingram also notched the most points for fastest laps and laps led, with Team BMW's Colin Turkington clinching the most pole positions in 2022.

It's little surprise that Hill concludes the season with the highest number of rostrum results, testament to his affinity with the BMW 330e M Sport.

Check out the full accolade breakdown below.

WHO SET THE PACE IN 2022?

Following another thrilling Kwik Fit British Touring Car Championship, it’s time to crunch the numbers and determine who the best qualifying performers were across the 2022 campaign. Let’s break down the top three...

In terms of the best average qualifying position, ROKiT MB Motorsport’s Jake Hill claims the top spot with an average of 3.9. The Kent racer was consistently impressive throughout the campaign, claiming two pole positions, as well as a further five top-three finishes. To top it off, Hill only qualified outside the top five twice this season, truly maximising his qualifying opportunity.

Next up was Bristol Street Motors with EXCELR8 Trade Price Cars.com’s Tom Ingram, who secured his maiden championship in 2022. In a similar style to Hill, Ingram has held a steady record this year, with a pair of pole positions, and only once found himself outside the top ten on the grid. Due to his consistency, the 29-year-old's average qualifying position was an impressive 5.3.

In third comes Colin Turkington (Team BMW). Turkington’s average position was only a small margin behind Ingram, being 5.6, despite qualifying outside the top nine on three occasions during the campaign. The Northern Irishman reinforced his strong qualifying performance, however, by securing a trio of pole positions in 2022 – the highest total of the grid.

Looking at their records throughout the year, it’s no surprise that this trio top the average qualifying table, and clinched pole seven times between them during the campaign while, interestingly, the other three drivers to claim P1 sit ninth and joint 11th.

Take a look at the infographic below to find out more about how the top 11 drivers' performances averaged out throughout the year...

BTCC Champ Ingram hails Engineer of the Year

The unsung heroes in any championship victory can often be the team of personnel behind the title-winning driver, and none more so than this year’s ‘BTCC Engineer of the Year’, Spencer Aldridge.

The accolade, which was first introduced in 2016, gives the chance to celebrate the successes of the Chief Engineer behind the Championship-winning car.

Aldridge first worked with the new Kwik Fit British Touring Car Champion Tom Ingram when he made his graduation to the UK’s premier motorsport series back in 2014.

The duo combined during Ingram’s race-winning days at Speedworks Motorsport, as the 29-year-old High Wycombe racer became a regular title contender. Later, Aldridge became a vital ingredient in Ingram’s switch to EXCELR8 Motorsport in 2021.

The long-awaited championship came in 2022, as Aldridge masterminded Tom’s six race wins and further six podiums, with Ingram claiming the title in his Bristol Street Motors with EXCELR8 TradePriceCars.com’s Hyundai.

It therefore follows, that after winning one of the most unpredictable Drivers’ Championship battles in recent memory, Aldridge be recognised for both his impressive calibre and his influential contributions to the season.

“Spencer is a really special guy to work with,” said Ingram. “He’s actually like no one else I’ve worked with in the sense that his work ethic is absolutely second to none.

“He’s got an enormous drive and desire to win but will back that up with putting the hard work in as well. And I think because of that, it inspires all the other team, mechanics, and myself to work harder, to match Spencer’s work ethic.”

Ingram credits his maiden overall title to his longstanding relationship with Aldridge, as well as Aldridge’s complete expertise, facilitating a victory over a nail-biting finale that saw four contenders fighting for the biggest prize in British motorsport.

“Spencer knows exactly how to get the best out of me as I know how to get the best out of Spencer.”

“I’m absolutely thrilled that he’s been able to win it. It’s massively well deserved – I’d argue that he should’ve won it a few times before he has!”

Aldridge was awarded the trophy on Saturday 5th November, at the TOCA Night of Champions, which drew the curtain on the electrifying 2022 season.

TOCA NIGHT OF CHAMPIONS DRAWS CURTAIN ON 2022 BTCC

Saturday (5 November) saw the TOCA Night of Champions draw the curtain on the 2022 Kwik Fit British Touring Car Championship, as drivers, team personnel, and other guests donned their Sunday best for the crowning of this year's champions.

The paddock assembled for the final time in 2022 to celebrate all the BTCC trophy winners, as well as the support series champions.

The first of the BTCC success stories to claim their prize was this year's Engineer of the Year, Bristol Street Motors with EXCELR8 TradePriceCars.com's Spencer Aldridge...

First introduced in 2016, the ‘BTCC Engineer of the Year’ award celebrates the successes of the Chief Engineer behind the Championship-winning car and, having worked with Tom Ingram throughout his BTCC career, the connection between this pair has proven to be title-worthy in 2022.

“Spencer is really like no one else I’ve ever worked with," said Ingram. "His work ethic is absolutely second-to-none, he’s got an enormous drive and desire to win, but will back that up with putting the hard work in as well and I think that inspires everyone in the team.

“We’ve learned together, both improved over the years, and are a good little pairing now. Spencer knows exactly how to get the best out of me as I know how to get the best out of Spencer. We just work really well together as a team, and I’m absolutely thrilled that he’s been able to win it and I hope it’s going to be the first of many for him.”

Called to the stage next was the Independent Teams’ Champion, Rich Energy BTC Racing...

The fight for glory in this year’s Independent Teams’ Championship was as ultra-competitive as ever, and there were two teams that rose above and kept one another honest until the final chequered flag fell at Brands Hatch.

Rich Energy BTC Racing quickly established itself as a frontrunning Independents’ squad in 2022, with Josh Cook leading the way, while Jason Plato and Jade Edwards backed up the teams’ efforts with impressive performances throughout the campaign, claiming a maiden Independent Teams' title for the Brackley-based outfit.

NAPA Racing UK then collected the overall Teams’ crown...

This year we saw a new brand join the BTCC bill, as NAPA Racing UK embarked on its first campaign in Britain's premier motorsport series. The Motorbase Performance-run outfit proved it was a force to be reckoned with, clinching the crown in one of the fiercest title fights in the BTCC, as highly skilled and experienced manufacturers take on the professional and pacy independent outfits, with teamwork and consistency vital to any challenge.

Challenged by the likes of Team BMW and Bristol Street Motors with EXCELR8 TradePriceCars.com during the season, the Teams’ titleholder was hard to predict, but steady scoring and a hugely impressive performance for NAPA Racing UK drivers Ash Sutton and Dan Cammish in the second visit to Thruxton – where pole position and a race win for Cammish preceded a first-ever 1-2 finish for the team – gave the Wrotham-based squad an advantage their rivals couldn’t match.

It was then time for BMW to claim another consecutive Manufacturers’/Constructors’ Championship...

The 2022 campaign saw BMW once again claim the Manufacturers’ title, a record seventh successive championship, with Colin Turkington and Stephen Jelley spearheading Team BMW’s attack, and ROKiT MB Motorsport’s Jake Hill also chosen to score points during the campaign.

With new rivals joining the fray this year, the Bavarian marque’s challengers proved potent in the initial events, but BMW would hold the advantage from mid-way through the season onwards.

Particularly impressive points hauls at Knockhill and Snetterton accentuated another strong year in which BMW underlined its dominance in the Manufacturers’ battle.

Bobby Thompson, this year's Jack Sears Trophy was next to grace the stage...

The Jack Sears Trophy once again gives us the chance to celebrate drivers who have not stood on the podium before the start of the year and this year we saw a pair of drivers embroiled in a close race for glory before the eventual champion of the 2022 season rose to take the honours.

In a campaign that not only saw his maiden overall podium result, Bobby Thompson very nearly outscored his previous three seasons combined, cementing his pace and potential with 12 JST victories and a further 14 top-three results in the category.

Bobby was regularly fighting for overall points throughout the season and sealed an unassailable points lead in the penultimate race of the year, having clinched his final two JST victories in Brands Hatch’s opening two rounds.

Thompson soon returned to claim his third-place trophy in the Independent Drivers' Championship, with Adam Morgan second in the title fight, before Josh Cook took the crown...

Outscoring a number of more experienced drivers within the BTCC during the 2022 campaign, Autobrite Direct with JourneyHero’s Thompson sealed third place having secured 11 rostrum finishes in the class, and bagging consistent results throughout the year.

Car Gods with Ciceley Motorsport’s Morgan had an impressive year in his second campaign in the rear-wheel drive BMW 330e M Sport. His strong performance resulted in a notable eight wins, six second-place finishes, and a further hat-trick of third-place rostrums and, although a smattering of retirements curtailed his title tilt, the 34-year-old was able to seal the runners-up spoils in the Independent Drivers’ Championship.

After opening his campaign with 12 successive rostrum results in the class, this year's Independent Drivers' Champion comes as little surprise.

Tallying five overall victories – a record only bettered by overall champion Ingram – Cook has been a frontrunner throughout the year, and is one of the few drivers to only finish outside of the points-paying positions on one occasion.

It’s quite safe to say Cook has been a dominant force in the chase for Independents’ glory in 2022, grabbing 12 wins, six second-place finishes, and a further six third places.

In his best BTCC campaign to date, Jake Hill secured third place in the overall Drivers' Championship, while three-time titleholder Ash Sutton took the runners-up position...

Showing progression year-on-year during his BTCC career, this young man is edging ever closer to claiming a maiden BTCC title.

Having secured this year’s Goodyear Wingfoot Award for his remarkable qualifying performance, as well as more podium finishes than any driver on the grid this year including three race victories, Jake Hill has proven an impressive affinity with his WSR-run BMW 330e M Sport.

The ROKiT MB Motorsport driver racked up a particularly impressive 25 top-ten results throughout the season and headed into the finale just five points off the summit of the standings. Jake’s pursuit of the crown continued at Brands Hatch, where he bagged two podiums, and his entertaining, no-holds-barred driving style has wowed fans throughout the year and also rewarded him with his highest-ever finishing position, with third place overall.

Despite having to adapt to a new team and front-wheel drive machinery for 2022, a trio of wins and nine further podiums reflects the skill and class of three-time champion Ash Sutton.

While fate denied him that all-important maiden victory for NAPA Racing UK during the first half of the year, Ash kept himself at the sharp end with a string of top tens and rostrum results, before he finally took the win at Knockhill.

Two further wins followed at Snetterton and the second visit to Thruxton – notably in his 200th BTCC race – and a consistently strong performance during Brands Hatch’s finale elevated him to second in the standings as the sun set, but a record-equalling fourth crown wasn’t on the cards on this occasion and the 2022 BTCC Drivers’ Championship runner-up is Ash Sutton.

Rounding off the awards presentation, the 2022 British Touring Car Champion claimed his crown...

The 2022 campaign gave us one of the most unpredictable Drivers’ Championship battles in recent memory, with three of the four title contenders heading into the finale with just seven points separating them – the closest margin since 2011 – and, after an incredible effort throughout the year, we saw Tom Ingram take a maiden overall title and become the 65th champion in the BTCC's illustrious history.

In his second season in the EXCELR8 Motorsport-run Hyundai, Tom stated his intentions on the crown with a race win in the opening round. A brace of podium finishes followed before he would next grace the top step, which he did in style, converting pole position to a pair of lights-to-flag victories at Oulton Park.

Only dropping out of the top ten in one round from Croft onwards, Tom kept himself at the sharp end and headed into Brands Hatch’s season finale occupying third in the standings.

Not one to back down with silverware in sight, the 29-year-old repeated his Oulton Park feat, following up pole position with a double win. In fact, he produced such a commanding performance that his championship points tally at the conclusion of Round 29 would’ve still awarded him the crown.

The celebrations continued throughout the evening, with dinner, dance, and magical entertainment alongside the glittering trophy proceedings, as everyone in the paddock rewarded one another's achievements and efforts throughout this year's campaign before the hard work for 2023 gets back underway!
