Toyota trio aiming to tame ultra-fast Thruxton

TOYOTA GAZOO Racing UK is Thruxton-bound this weekend (3/4 June) for the next three rounds of the Championship. Their Japanese ‘hot hatch’ still holds the official BTCC race lap record from 2020, when they came away with a double victory.

There is nowhere quite like Thruxton on the national motor racing scene – with an abrasive surface, top speeds verging on an eye-watering 160mph and scant margin for error, it is a circuit that truly rewards those brave enough to push to the limit – but bites anybody who strays beyond.

Rory Butcher added to the team’s growing silverware collection at Snetterton, claiming second place – the Scot’s 30th career rostrum – in the final race. The 36-year-old Kirkcaldy native is also a multiple podium-finisher at Thruxton and is fired-up to go one step higher this weekend.

Stablemate Ricky Collard has been out-of-luck for much of his sophomore campaign with the team to-date, but his pace is certainly not in doubt, as the 26-year-old Surrey-born star increasingly establishes himself as a contender. He, too, has form at Thruxton – his home track – after claiming the runner-up spoils there in MSA Formula in 2015.

George Gamble achieved his maiden car racing win at the circuit in Ginetta Juniors in 2011, going on to reach the rostrum there again in the Porsche Carrera Cup GB. Piloting the third Corolla, the Nottinghamshire racer is swiftly settling into his new surroundings and getting to grips with front wheel-drive this season, as he’s looking for a big result that is surely now a question of ‘when’ rather than ‘if’.

Saturday afternoon’s qualifying session will be streamed on ITV Sport’s YouTube channel from 1515, with every moment of Sunday’s doorhandle-to-doorhandle action to be broadcast live and in high-definition on ITV4, beginning at 1115.

Rory Butcher, Driver, TOYOTA GAZOO Racing UK, said:

“Thruxton is totally unique on the BTCC calendar. When you truly nail a lap around there, it’s an extraordinary feeling and you know you’ve had to work hard – your hands are still shaking on the steering wheel when you come back into the pit-lane afterwards. As racing drivers, that’s what we enjoy most – really grabbing the car by the scruff of the neck and wringing every last drop out of it, and I love the way the Corolla dances through some of the quicker sections. Let’s go and do this!”

Ricky Collard, Driver, TOYOTA GAZOO Racing UK, said:

“I make no apology for being an old-school, ‘balls-to-the-wall’ racer – that’s simply who I am, it’s in my genes – and as an old-school, balls-to-the-wall circuit, Thruxton is just my kind of vibe. Qualifying there is one of the biggest challenges of the season – it calls for maximum commitment and then some. Through the fastest corners, every voice in your head is screaming at you to rein it in, but your foot stays planted firmly to the floor. It’s the kind of place where you need to leave your brain behind when you exit the pits...”

George Gamble, Driver, TOYOTA GAZOO Racing UK, said:

“I’m looking forward to Thruxton. It’s certainly not a place for the faint-hearted – you need to put everything on the line to extract a good lap – and I’ve got happy memories of the track from the BTCC support series. While I struggled there last year, I’m excited to see what it’s like in front wheel-drive and I’m feeling more comfortable and at home in the Corolla every time out.”

One Motorsport with Starline Racing Enthusiastic Ahead of Thruxton

One Motorsport with Starline Racing’s trio of drivers are hoping for a successful weekend as the contest prepares to tackle the fastest circuit on the calendar, Thruxton (3/4 June).

The Hampshire speed-bowl sees average lap speeds of over 110mph around the challenging 2.36-mile former airfield. It is also a track where One Motorsport with Starline Racing driver Josh Cook has had success in the past.

The Honda Civic Type R racer has claimed 10 victories at the historic venue – some may say Cook has the nickname King of Thruxton. The Bath racer is brimming with excitement ahead of the BTCC’s return to the track, while team-mates Aiden Moffat and Will Powell will be aiming to tap into Cook’s knowledge and expertise this weekend.

The Brackley-based outfit had a successful weekend last time out at Snetterton earlier in May. Cook was a double Independents Trophy winner and both he and Moffat registered top 10 finishes in the final race of the day.

Cook, who is firmly inside the top 10, is in the hunt for this year’s overall title. He explains that the lessons learned at Snetterton and the upcoming Thruxton layout have put overall race victory on his radar.

“There are a few rival cars out there which are on fire in terms of pace at the moment, but we will concentrate on what we can do,” said Cook, “That is all we can do. I know how to get the car working well around Thruxton and we made really good progress at Snetterton.”

“I really click with Thruxton and it is no secret that I love it. I don’t feel like I do anything unusual or trick to get the most from it because I am not aware of what the others are doing specifically. But even if I did have a special knack, it is not something I am going to share with anyone but my One Motorsport with Starling Racing team-mates…”

Moffat is aiming to capitalise on any advantage that Cook can provide ahead of the event. The Scotsman took two podiums in the Independents’ Trophy last time out and thinks that the momentum can carry him even further this weekend.

“I am looking forward to Thruxton, we all know that Josh and the Honda have always been ballistic around Thruxton in the past and that should stand us in good stead,” commented Moffat

“When you add in all of those factors, I am very excited about the challenge that lays ahead at Thruxton. It is always a track which rewards bravery and it puts a smile on your face, and I want to be smiling on Sunday night too.”

Will Powell scored three solid finishes at Snetterton last time out as he aims to bank more experience this year.

“People often assume that Thruxton is a power circuit, because the speeds are so high, but actually it is all about having a sweet-handling chassis though all the sweeping sections,” said Powell, “The One Motorsport with Starline Racing Honda Civic certainly has that.”

“I had my first BTCC experience of Thruxton last season, which was a bit of a baptism of fire. It will be nice to be going back there with a car I trust and with another year’s knowledge behind me.”

The three races from Thruxton will be shown on ITV4. The opening encounter is scheduled to get the green flag at 11:30, with race two at 14:35 and the finale at 17:20. Qualifying will be streamed live on itv.com/touringcars and is also shown on the ITV Sport YouTube channel at 15:15 on Saturday afternoon.

BTCC on TV: Thruxton

The fourth event of the 2023 Kwik Fit British Touring Car Championship gets underway this weekend at Thruxton (3/4 June). Below is all the information you need to know to keep up with the tin-top action…

A fortnight ago, the Snetterton 300 circuit welcomed the BTCC teams and drivers for the third instalment of this year’s Championship, providing the unique challenge of being the longest track on the current calendar.

NAPA Racing UK’s Ash Sutton scored a double triumph across the first two races, after securing pole position in Saturday’s Qualifying session. His success landed in him on top of the Drivers' Standings, with a seven point lead ahead of his nearest rival Tom Ingram (BRISTOL STREET MOTORS with EXCELR8).

NAPA Racing UK continue to lead the Teams/ Constructors' Standings; the team have taken all three available pole positions in the season thus far, with three different drivers.

After securing two Independents wins in races one and three, Josh Cook now leads the Independent Drivers battle, while Autobrite Direct with Millers Oils remain top of the Independent Teams.

Sam Osborne continues to lead the contest for the Jack Sears Trophy, after taking another JST honour in race two.

However, with just over half a season remaining, all is still to play for...

This weekend’s race day action will feature on the home of the BTCC, ITV4, from 1115 on Sunday (4 June) while ITV Sport’s own Youtube channel and itv.com/btcc will host qualifying on Saturday (3 June) from 1515.

Goodyear selects hard tyre for super-fast Thruxton

This weekend (3/4 June), the 2023 Kwik Fit British Touring Car Championship heads to Thruxton for Rounds 10, 11 and 12 of the campaign, where Goodyear will bring the hardest tyre compound available for one of the most demanding circuits on the calendar.

Following the success of all three compounds being used at Snetterton two weeks ago – which added a layer of strategy that delivered three thrilling races – Thruxton poses a very different challenge for drivers and teams. Here, drivers will achieve the highest average speeds of the season thanks to the circuit’s multiple long, high-speed corners, with over 110mph average expected in qualifying. The circuit’s notoriously abrasive surface and aggressive kerbs call for the toughest tyre in the Goodyear range.

Michael Butler, Event Leader: “The Goodyear hard tyre has been proven at Thruxton in previous years. We took the decision to not offer a choice of compounds here, forcing drivers to use the hard tyre for qualifying and all three races. The circuit characteristics make it one of the hardest in the world for chassis and tyre engineers.

“Goodyear will also mandate specific pressure and camber settings based on our years of experience at this circuit.”

A Strong Points Haul for WSR and BMW ahead of Thruxton

WSR-run cars claimed four podiums at Snetterton (20/21 May) as Team BMW was awarded top-scoring team of the weekend. It's a strong position to enter Thruxton (3/4 June), where the Kwik Fit British Touring Car Championship will host its fourth event of 2023.

Both Laser Tools Racing with MB Motorsport’s Jake Hill and Team BMW’s Colin Turkington took their BMW 330e M Sports to a pair of podium finishes each, while Stephen Jelley and Adam Morgan produced consistent scores across the day.

Turkington and Hill started the opening race from the second row and aimed for rostrum results early on, as they took advantage of having chosen the Goodyear soft tyre.

Hill passed his WSR stablemate at three-quarters distance and chased for the lead; eventually finishing 0.270s away from victory, while Turkington – a 10-time race winner at Snetterton, was third.

Opting for the medium tyre for Race Two, both drivers found the going tougher, but persevered to again finish second and third.

Race Three was the toughest of the day with both drivers on the hard tyre when overcast conditions favoured those on the soft and medium rubber. Turkington finished seventh with Hill 10th.

Lancashire’s Morgan moved up a spot from his sixth place on the Race One grid to come home fifth and then finished there again in Race Two. He battled to finish ninth on the hard tyre in Race Three.

Leicester driver Jelley left Snetterton with his best weekend points haul of 2023 and with seven-place gain in the Drivers’ Standings. He is now 12th overall.

The BMW 330e M Sport has now finished on the podium eight times from the opening three weekends of 2023, with Team BMW moving into second place in the Teams’ standings.

Jake Hill (Laser Tools Racing with MB Motorsport) said: “Overall it’s been a good day. The BMW’s been quick in Races One and Two and even in the last race I don’t think we could have done any better with the hard tyre. But on the whole two seconds is great and we move on to Thruxton where I’ve been strong for the past few years and aim to get the first win of 2023 there.”

Colin Turkington (Team BMW) said: “Any weekend where you’re on the podium twice gives you a fair bit to celebrate, and I think we pretty much achieved the maximum possible to be fast on all three tyre compounds. We have some very good circuits coming up and as we get into the summer and the hotter temperatures that come with it, that should suit us and give us our big chance to attack.”

Adam Morgan (Team BMW) said: “Overall it was a good points day that made up for the low score at Brands Hatch. The driver in me says I still need to find a couple of tenths to compete with Colin and Jake, but I’m generally pretty pleased. It’s my biggest score of the year and we can definitely make more progress going forwards.”

Stephen Jelley (Team BMW) said: “That’s my biggest points day for a little while and I’m really pleased with how things have gone. Race One was the best because with the soft tyre I could pass cars anywhere, Race Two was quite stable and then I was really hanging on with the hard in Race Three, so to be the top BMW drivers – ahead of Colin, Jake and Adam, who are all really good drivers – is pretty satisfying.”

BTCC turns to Thruxton

UK’s fastest circuit awaits tin-top stars

With events now coming thick and fast, the Kwik Fit British Touring Car Championship prepares for its fourth race weekend of the season at Thruxton in Hampshire on 3/4 June.

With nine races now complete, the 2023 title chase is well underway with Ash Sutton leading the Drivers’ charge. Yet, with the top five having all reached the rostrum so far this season, all will be to play for as the BTCC heads to the fastest circuit in the UK.

A stellar outing for NAPA Racing UK’s Sutton at Snetterton last time out saw him score a supreme double triumph across the first two races, after securing pole position in Saturday’s Qualifying session.

The three-time champ started race day with his 30th career victory, as he held off a late charge from Jake Hill’s Laser Tools Racing with MB Motorsport BMW. This was followed by a dominant light-to-flag triumph in Round 8, ensuring the 29-year-old's spot at the top of the Drivers’ Standings.

Nearest rival Tom Ingram (BRISTOL STREET MOTORS with EXCELR8) sits only seven points behind, after taking his first victory of the season during the finale at the Norfolk circuit. The reigning champion fought his way from seventh on the grid to first with a fantastic drive.

West Surrey Racing stablemates Colin Turkington and Jake Hill both achieved podiums on two occasions during the day, whilst TOYOTA GAZOO Racing UK’s Rory Butcher and NAPA Racing UK’s Dan Rowbottom completed the top three in the reverse grid race.

NAPA Racing UK’s success across the first three events, including claiming all available pole positions with three different drivers, has placed them top of the Teams’/ Manufacturers’ Standings.

Autobrite Direct with Millers Oils’ driver, Dan Lloyd, also claimed his first Independent Drivers’ victory of the season during the second race, helping retain his outfit’s lead in the Independent Teams’ Standings. However, it was One Motorsport with Starline Racing’s Josh Cook who took the advantage in the Drivers’ standings, after securing the other two Independents’ wins.

With ten BTCC victories around the 2.36-mile circuit to his name, Cook holds the record as the most successful driver in the series’ history at Thruxton, and the 32-year-old will no doubt be aiming to build on that figure next weekend.

Local Lights

Bath racer Cook is just one of the drivers to whom Thruxton is somewhat of a home event.

TOYOTA GAZOO Racing UK’s Ricky Collard lives in Hampshire, whilst NAPA Racing UK’s Dan Cammish has relocated from Leeds to Bracknell.

The circuit also marks the nearest for Jersey racer Jack Butel (Go-Fix with Autoaid Breakdown) so there will be a quartet of drivers vying for bragging rights at their closest racing venue.

TV, Timetables and Tickets

Complimenting the tin-top racing will be a sensational line-up of support series, as the Dunlop Mini Se7en Challenge supported by Mini Spares, Porsche Carrera Cup Great Britain, ROKiT F4 British Championship and MINI CHALLENGE completes the schedule of exciting races.

Saturday’s qualifying session will be streamed live via ITV Sport’s YouTube channel from 1515, before ITV4’s more than seven-hour race day broadcast gets underway at 1155 on Sunday.

Tickets are available in advance or can be purchased on the gate throughout the weekend – visit here for more details.

SOLID POINTS HAUL FOR CARSTORE POWER MAXED RACING AT SNETTERTON

CarStore Power Maxed Racing’s re-build towards the front of the 2023 Kwik Fit British Touring Car Championship continued with a brace of points finishes at Snetterton last weekend (20/21 May).

The Bidford-on-Avon team arrived at the 2.97-mile Norfolk venue looking to recover the front-running form the team displayed at the Donington Park season opener.

After placing all three cars within the top ten in practice, qualifying proved to be a frustrating affair for the team’s trio of Aron Taylor-Smith, Andrew Watson, and Mikey Doble, with a combination of track limits and persistent red-flag stoppages hampering their best efforts.

Taylor-Smith was highest-placed in 12th, and the Irishman got his elbows out in race trim to advance forward and round out the top ten in the opening race, just shy of an Independent race victory. Doble emerged on top of an inter-team battle with Watson over 17th and 18th spots.

Once again in race two, Taylor-Smith banked more points in 12th, after defending against a whole host of attempted overtakes.

The 33-year-old’s antics were the focus of ITV4’s live television coverage for a fair majority of the 12-lap contest, and crucially earned the team a spot in the coveted reverse grid draw. Watson made it ‘one-all’ against Doble, the pair taking the chequered flag 18th and 19th respectively.

But luck fell against the CarStore-backed squad on this occasion and, with all three cars now running the Hard tyre, with a 2.5-second per lap deficit to the quicker compounds, it would be an uphill task to salvage anything from the finale.

Taylor-Smith fought hard to hold on for a hat-trick of points but an incident pitched the Vauxhall Astra into a spin at Williams, and after striking the barrier, the four-time race winner was forced to limp back to the pits, and into an early retirement from the race.

Doble and Watson battled on in a closely-packed midfield, with the former ending the weekend amongst the points in P15, Watson just behind in P17.

As a result of the weekend, CarStore Power Maxed Racing sit third in the Independent Teams standings, with Doble and Watson now fourth and fifth outright in the Jack Sears Trophy stakes.

Aron Taylor-Smith said: “I feel we got everything we could out of the CarStore Power Maxed Racing Astra this weekend, and I’m particularly pleased with the performance in both races one and two.

“It’s always nice to be battling against the manufacturer-supported programmes, and to put on the show that we did. I particularly enjoyed race two, it was nice to be right in the thick of the action from the start to the end.

“Race three was just unfortunate contact, which put us out of the race. It was a shame because the car felt very strong, and I think we could have challenged for a top ten.

“But that is life, after reviewing the judicials, there’s nothing more I could have done. Overall, I’m very happy with our performance.

“In my opinion, we were strong from the get-go all weekend, which bodes well heading to a historically strong circuit for the Astra in Thruxton. We’ve shown our potential across all three races, and we can build on this at the next round.”

Andrew Watson said: “The weekend started quite positively; we had the pace yesterday to qualify inside the top ten. But track limits scuppered that, and we struggled running back in the pack today.

“In the last race, on the Hard tyre, the ambient temperature dropped a bit, so I think we just missed the window. It was just about staying on track and scoring some Jack Sears Trophy points.

“A difficult weekend, but we’re still feeling positive. The team did everything right and ran well, there were no mistakes from that side, so fair play. We move on to Thruxton.”

Mikey Doble said: “It was nice to get an entire weekend in the dry conditions under my belt. The car felt really good, and I’m really pleased with how the team, and I are working to develop it and keep pushing forward.

“That was reflected in my best qualifying of the season yesterday, and in the races today, we definitely held our own out there.

“The first two races were steady, we kept out of trouble and put a good showing in. Race 3 was definitely the highlight; against all odds, on the Hard tyre, the car felt really good and we narrowly missed out on being the top Jack Sears Trophy scorer.

“It was, however, good to come away with a points finish in the last race, and it gives us something to build on next time out at Thruxton.”

The BTCC will return to Thruxton next weekend (3/4 June) for its fourth event of the 2023 season.

Daniel Lloyd battles hard for Independents' win at Snetterton

Daniel Lloyd produced a battling performance on track at Snetterton (20/21 May) to pick up his first silverware of the 2023 Kwik Fit British Touring Car Championship season.

The Huddersfield racer headed into the weekend on the back of a triple points score at Brands Hatch in the previous meeting, and hopeful of strengthening his position in the top three of the Independents’ standings.

Quickest of the Team HARD-run Cupra Leons throughout free practice, Lloyd qualified 15th on the grid for the opening race of the weekend – despite being one of several drivers to experience a trip off track due to oil dropped on the circuit at Coram.

That left him in a solid position going into the opening race, where Lloyd elected to run the less favourable hard compound tyre at the first opportunity.

Bolting on the soft tyre for race two, Lloyd was in fine form as he made up four places on the opening lap before fighting ahead of Aron Taylor-Smith mid-way through the race to take a first top-ten finish of the campaign - and the Independents’ class win.

More points were there for the taking in race three on the medium tyre but contact from Taylor-Smith mid-way through lap one saw Lloyd onto the grass, where he managed to regain control and re-joined at the back of the field.

Getting his head down, Lloyd charged back through the pack and looked set to recover into the points until contact dropped him back to 17th place.

Ahead of the next round at Thruxton, Lloyd sits 17th overall and third in the Independents’ Trophy.

"Overall, it’s been a really positive weekend and we have shown strong pace with the car," said Lloyd, "We were a bit in the dark coming into the weekend with the tyres, as we only had a little bit of running on the soft and didn’t know what the hard tyre would be like at all.

"I feel we did a good job to hold position with the hard tyre and then made-up ground with the soft, and I think the speed was really strong on the medium tyre. I really fancied us for a top-six finish with the pace in the car, and without the contact on lap one, I’m sure we’d have got one.”

"I had a new engineer this weekend in the shape of Tom Hunt, who was previously with Team Dynamics, and I feel we did a mega job with the car. We’ve taken a big step forward, and it’s great to now be in a position where we can score our first Independents’ win of the season.”

Butcher Carves Through The Pack For First Podium Of The Season At Snetterton

Snetterton has historically been a happy hunting ground for TOYOTA GAZOO Racing UK, and that theme continued last weekend (20/21 May) as Rory Butcher produced a determined drive, carving through the field to take the runners-up spot in Round 9 of the 2023 Kwik Fit British Touring Cars Championship.

Around the longest circuit on the BTCC calendar, qualifying was interrupted by a brace of red flag stoppages for an oil leak and a car off the track. When the session resumed with just 15 minutes left on the clock, none of the Toyota drivers had a representative lap time on the board.

Yet, Butcher, Ricky Collard and George Gamble dug deep, with Collard leading the charge in fifth, Butcher not far behind in eighth and Gamble vaulting up the order right at the end from 23rd into 12th.

On Sunday, Collard made a bright start to the curtain-raising contest with the medium-compound tyres on his British-built Toyota Corolla GR Sport, briefly challenging for third. However, he was then forced out on lap five when a stone flicked up by a car in front put a hole in his radiator.

On the less favourable harder Goodyear boots, Butcher fought well to stave off the pack behind – including Dan Cammish, championship leader going into the weekend – to finish ninth, with Gamble nabbing a couple of points for 14th.

Butcher advanced a spot to eighth in race two on the medium rubber, as Collard set about climbing his way up from the very back. Exploiting his soft tyres, the 26-year-old gained eight positions on the opening tour alone. He would conclude his charge in 13th – an impressive 14-place improvement on his starting slot – with Gamble narrowly missing out on a second consecutive score in 16th.

The Nottinghamshire racer was looking to finish with a flourish on the soft tyres in the day’s finale, but Lady Luck unfortunately had other ideas, with the No.42 car stopping on-track on the formation lap due to a fuel leak. Collard initially climbed into the top ten, but thereafter faced struggles on the hard rubber and clung on for a points finish in 14th

Up front, meanwhile, all eyes were on Butcher. Having despatched multiple-time champions Ash Sutton (NAPA Racing UK) and Colin Turkington (Team BMW), as well as Jake Hill (Laser Tools with MB Motorsport) on the first lap, he boldly passed Team BMWs Adam Morgan and Stephen Jelley the following time around.

After posting a new fastest lap and an overtake past Dan Rowbottom (NAPA Racing UK), before setting off in pursuit of reigning champion Tom Ingram in the lead. Ultimately, he had to concede to Cammish, but a post-race disqualification for the NAPA Racing driver reinstated the Kirkcaldy native in second, with his 30th career rostrum elevating him to eighth on our title table.

“Everybody in the team has been working their absolute socks off, and it was so good to bring some silverware back for them all and some buzz back to the garage,” said Butcher, “Our plan for Sunday was to put all our eggs in one basket and focus on race three, and that strategy paid off.”

“I was so pleased to score our first podium of the year – that was a great reward for the whole team, and it means a lot. We still clearly have a bit of speed to find, but we’re seeing the improvements and the result of all the effort that has been put in and we’re making good progress – and that’s hugely encouraging for the upcoming events.”

“We know the car is usually better over a race distance than a single lap, so we felt very optimistic going into Sunday, but it was obviously all undone early on when the stone got into the radiator in race one, which was pure misfortune,” said Collard, “That then left us on the back foot for the rest of the day, but I enjoyed getting stuck in and putting on a show in race two and salvaging what I could from race three on the hard tyres.

“I ran a different set-up to the other guys in free practice, but it didn’t really work so we followed the same direction as Ricky for qualifying,” said Gamble, “With the disruptions to the session, I didn’t have chance to get a genuine feel for the car and then my first representative lap time got disallowed due to track limits, which meant the pressure was on at the end with only one shot left.

“Like Rory, I spent all day Sunday banking the soft tyres, but unfortunately, we never got chance to capitalise. That was really frustrating, because there were only a handful of cars on the softs in race three. That was another chance to score some good points, but we’ll take it on the chin and go again next time.”
