Sutton vs Cook

The Dunlop MSA British Touring Car Championship is renowned for its ultra-close on-track battles, and perhaps the pick of those over the course of the season came as the 60th anniversary campaign drew to a close at Brands Hatch two weeks ago.

Starting third for the finale, Round 30, outgoing champion Ashley Sutton showed that 'once a champion, always a champion' as he embarked on a staggering race-long battle for the top step with Power Maxed TAG Racing's Josh Cook.

The pair ran side-by-side for the majority of the contest, with the race lead changing hands on multiple occasions. Cook wouldn't be outdone, though, and the pair – who are good friends and former team-mates, fought on as they whittled away at the lap count.

The scrap went as far as the last few metres of the final lap of the season, with Sutton eventually pinching the honours and signing off as the 2017 BTCC champion in fine style as he pipped Cook by just 0.032 seconds over the line.

That winning move put Sutton on 24 Dunlop #ForeverForward points in total to take the weekend honours for the third time in succession in 2018. Understandably, his manoeuvre was voted as the fans favourite overtake in Dunlop’s social media poll.

A look on-board, and it's obvious why!

Dunlop carries out wet tyre test

Preparations for the 2019 Dunlop MSA British Touring Car Championship got underway in earnest earlier this week, right off the back of the 2018 season finale at Brands Hatch, with the championship's official tyre supplier, Dunlop, carrying out a bevvy of wet tyre tests.

West Surrey Racing/BMW and Team Dynamics/Honda were the two manufacturer outfits requested to attend the event at Rockingham Motor Speedway by Dunlop, who had bowsers on-site to artificially soak the track surface as it sought to evaluate 2019's Dunlop BluResponse wet tyres well in advance of the forthcoming campaign.

Colin Turkington was on hand, fresh from his 2018 Drivers' title triumph, driving the Team BMW 125i M Sport, while Andrew Jordan doubled up the BMW contingent in the BMW Pirtek Racing-liveried 1 Series. Halfords Yuasa Racing regulars Matt Neal and Dan Cammish piloted their current generation FK8 Honda Civic Type Rs to double up the data gathered.

Mickey Butler, Manager, UK and One Brand Motorsport Events, was pleased with proceedings, and more will follow on Dunlop's off-season programme in due course.

After the Brands Hatch finale, Butler spoke on a positive 2018 campaign for the tyre manufacturer and the championship at large.

“It’s been a fantastic end to a superb season. Brands Hatch GP is one of those circuits that is kind on tyres and I knew the Option tyre would be the better one which it proved to be, it does give you the edge and the drivers love it," said Butler.

"I think looking at every race this season, whether it’s been the Hard or Soft-Option tyres, it really mixed the races up. It makes drivers and teams think about the different strategies they’ve got to bring in to it. Overall I’m very pleased, but wait for the surprises to come in 2019!”

Sutton seals #ForeverForward hat-trick whilst Ingram wins overall honours

Overall Dunlop #ForeverForward honours for the season went the way of Tom Ingram, with the Speedworks man also retaining the Dunlop MSA British Touring Car Championship’s Independent Drivers’ title and steering his outfit to the Independent Teams’ crown.

Ingram’s fight-backs became something of a trademark this season and, sure enough, the award that aims to recognise and reward drivers’ battles with adversity, went his way.

The season finale at Brands Hatch in the legendary Grand Prix circuit went down to the wire with #ForeverForward honours, the Independents’ Trophy, and Manufacturers’ and Teams’ titles all decided in Kent.

Heading into the triple-header, Ingram held the #ForeverForward advantage over defending BTCC champion Ash Sutton, who’d secured back-to-back honours over the previous two race weekends.

The reigning champ was aiming to go out on a high and it was Sutton who secured the weekend #ForeverForward. He battled back in race two having failed to finish the opening round - a stunning performance seeing him fly from 30th on the grid to eighth earning him 22 points, the highest in a single race over the weekend.

Starting third for the finale, Sutton again showed his class with a staggering, race-long battle for the top step with Josh Cook. The pair ran side-by-side for what seemed like an age before the Subaru man went around the outside out of the final turn and pinched victory by just 0.032 seconds over the line. BTCC at its best.

That put Sutton on 24 points in total to take the weekend honours for the third time in succession, and his move for the lead was understandably voted as the fans favourite overtake in Dunlop’s social media poll.

Ingram extended his FF advantage with a five-place gain in race one, as he chased Colin Turkington for the coveted BTCC crown. His bid for the overall title was over by race two, though, despite a spirited charge through the field that earned him ten spots, ensuring his #ForeverForward lead was insurmountable. He added a further two-place gain in race three to put him on 173 points to Sutton’s 150.

Chris Smiley was another notable improver, moving up 20 places across the weekend, with a solid drive in race two contributing 16 points to his tally.

Other fans’ favourite moves across the weekend were double race-winner Dan Cammish’s manoeuvre on Brett Smith in race one. Andrew Jordan wowed the fans with his lightning start in race two, up into third from eighth, to secure the vote in Round 29.

Dunlop #ForeverForward weekend honours:

1. Ash SUTTON, 24
2. Chris SMILEY, 20

Ingram and Speedworks retain Indy crowns

Tom Ingram and Speedworks Motorsport successfully defended their Independent crowns in the 2018 Dunlop MSA British Touring Car Championship finale at Brands Hatch last weekend, as Ingram came within just 12 points of stealing the biggest prize in British motorsport.

Having done the Independents’ double in 2017 – a maiden BTCC title for both driver and team – Ingram and Speedworks arrived at Brands’ legendary 2.43-mile GP Circuit fully focussed on replicating that achievement, while simultaneously chasing the top spot in the overall Drivers’ standings, in which Ingram trailed Colin Turkington by 34 points.

Whilst such a deficit had never previously been overcome in the BTCC, that certainly did not stop Ingram and Speedworks from trying.

The 66kg of success ballast aboard the #80 Toyota Avensis hurt their challenge in qualifying, restricting Ingram to 19thon the grid but he ground out a 14th-place finish in race one, less than a second outside the top ten.

The result extended the gap between Turkington and Ingram to 36 points going into race two, with only 44 remaining in play – but the Speedworks man would not be defeated.

With the weight removed, he immediately went on the attack, gaining three spots on the opening lap, despatching his title rival with an incisive overtake into Paddock Hill Bend beginning lap two and pulling off several more moves as he charged into fourth place.

There, though, his progress was stopped in its tracks by Turkington’s team-mate Andrew Jordan, who proved impossible to unseat. Only 1.3 seconds shy of victory at the chequered flag, the result agonisingly left Ingram just a single point short of taking the fight on to the last race of the season.

His eighth Independents’ triumph of the campaign nonetheless sealed that title for the second consecutive year, and from seventh on the reversed grid for the finale – his 150th start in the BTCC – the 25-year-old put in another gritty display.

He was firmly in the podium battle throughout, with fifth position – again, well within sight of the race-winner – more than enough to guarantee Speedworks’ the Independent Teams’ trophy.

Ingram’s efforts – allied to multiple title-winner Turkington failing to score in races two and three – ultimately saw him finish just 12 points adrift in the Drivers’ table, prompting BTCC boss Alan Gow to tip him as a future champ. It was a performance that drew similarly high praise from Speedworks Team Principal Christian Dick.

“Tom has been brilliant all year,” he said, after the Cheshire-based outfit secured an excellent fifth spot out of 21 in the outright Teams’ Championship. “I can’t think of a single moment when he has put a foot wrong, and he has produced some sensational drives through the field – including here at Brands. Likewise, the boys have been exceptional – their work ethic is just faultless. We’re far from the biggest crew in the paddock, but we’ve definitely got the most talented and passionate bunch of guys out there and I’m incredibly proud of each and every one of them.

“We were all really excited coming to Brands Hatch to see what we could do. We knew we were very much the underdogs and that the odds were stacked against us, but we fought right to the bitter end and Tom never gave up – he threw absolutely everything at it. He might not have been in a BTCC title showdown before, but you would never have known – he was peerless under the pressure.

“The tension inevitably builds as the weekend unfolds, and it was an emotional rollercoaster ride throughout. There was understandably some disappointment after race two, but there was still a job to do in race three and we all knuckled down to get that job done.

“It’s a phenomenal achievement to win both Independents’ titles two years on the bounce, and testament to the stellar work everybody here has put in – particularly as a single-car operation. We have performed well with full ballast, no ballast and on all different compounds of tyre, which fills us with so much confidence moving forward. This season, we thought we could win the overall Drivers’ Championship; going into next season, we know we can do it.”

“Coming into 2018, we had our sights set on the outright title,” added Ingram, whose hat-trick of victories, nine podium finishes, five fastest laps and 171 overtakes over the course of the campaign earned him the Dunlop #ForeverForward honours.

“It was perhaps a little bit tongue-in-cheek given the might of the manufacturer-backed teams we are up against, and to put together a successful championship-winning bid in what is Britain’s toughest motorsport series is a huge challenge, but that was our goal.

“You can always look back at what could have been or should have been, but we can’t dwell and overall it has been one hell of a year for us. The Avensis has been an absolute joy to drive, and the support we have received has been nothing short of mind-blowing.

“We’ve got some amazing people here at Speedworks, and the work they all put in is truly second-to-none, both at the track and behind-the-scenes back at the factory – they’re a brilliant bunch of lads and I couldn’t ask to have a better team around me.

“We had to give it everything at Brands Hatch and we gave it 150 per cent – we couldn’t have done any more. I knew we needed one more place in race two, but my brakes and tyres were gone and there was just nothing left in the tank.

“Obviously I’m bitterly disappointed, but Colin is a great champion and has done a fantastic job so all credit to him, and we certainly didn’t go down without a fight! We had a few setbacks along the way that ultimately cost us, but they only serve to pull this small team of ours even tighter together and make us want it even more.

“Ultimately, we weren’t quite able to match Colin’s consistency this year, so that’s what we need to work on for next season but we will learn from that and come back stronger. 2018 has been incredible. Hopefully 2019 will be even better!”

Eurotech Racing sells cars and TBLs to another outfit

Eurotech Racing has today confirmed that it will not compete in the 2019 Dunlop MSA British Touring Car Championship.

Its pair of Honda Civic Type Rs and its TOCA BTCC Licences (TBLs) have been sold to another team, which will make its own announcement in due course.

Team Principal Jeff Smith said: “I am incredibly proud of our team and what we have achieved and this has been a very difficult decision to have to come to, but we have been left with no choice, unfortunately.

“One of our major sponsors, ICD, is currently unable to continue with the level of support they have been contributing.

“I would like to personally thank all of our team and drivers for their hard work, and our sponsors, technical partners and fans for their support throughout the past four seasons.”

Colin Turkington crowned triple BTCC Champion

Team BMW star holds firm on finals day at Brands Hatch

The 2018 Dunlop MSA British Touring Car Championship – the Diamond Jubilee year of the UK’s premier motorsport series – drew to a close at Brands Hatch today (30 September) with Team BMW’s Colin Turkington crowned champion for the third time in his career.

Turkington held a 34-point advantage going into the final weekend of the season, and he duly extended that gap by a further two in the opening contest around the legendary Kent circuit.

Nearest challenger, Tom Ingram, then needed to score at least a podium in the second bout to keep his championship charge alive, and the Speedworks Motorsport star did everything he could to achieve it.

Surging from 14th on the grid, Toyota man Ingram made pass after pass and was lying in fourth during the closing stages. He made a number of attempts to make one more all-important move, but BMW Pirtek Racing’s Andrew Jordan held on ahead of him – helping to secure stablemate Turkington’s BTCC title hat-trick, as well as Manufacturers’ and Teams’ glory for BMW.

Turkington’s stellar season was one of incredible consistency as he won just one race during the 30-race campaign – at Oulton Park in June – but a further ten podium finishes underlined his brilliance.

Ingram ended his impressive season on a high with yet more charging drives, which were a staple of his 2018 challenge. The 25-year-old was rewarded with a fantastic runners-up spot in the overall Drivers’ standings, as well as securing Independents’ titles for him and his Speedworks Motorsport squad.

Team Shredded Wheat Racing with Gallagher’s Tom Chilton completed the Championship top three, as well as following Ingram home in the fight for Independents’ honours.

The races themselves around the 2.43-mile Grand Prix circuit proved typically dramatic, with the best being saved until the last.

The opener went the way of Halfords Yuasa Racing’s Dan Cammish – a 17th different race winner of the season – as he headed home team-mate Matt Neal, whilst WIX Racing with Eurotech’s Brett Smith completed the podium.

Like London buses, the manufacturer-backed Honda boys did it again in race two as Cammish led Neal once more. It has been an up and down campaign for the Team Dynamics-run outfit, but a successful final day helped them to secure runners-up laurels in both the Manufacturers’ and Teams’ tables.

The final race was a BTCC classic as Ash Sutton triumphed by just 0.032s from Josh Cook.

An incredible battle between Power Maxed TAG Racing’s Cook and outgoing Champion Sutton had the huge crowd on its collective feet as the duo ran side-by-side and swapped positions on several occasions.

Cook looked to have held off his former team-mate and good friend going into the final corner, but Adrian Flux Subaru Racing’s Sutton had other ideas.

Sutton ran his Levorg around the outside of the Vauxhall Astra through Clearways and in an incredible drag race to the finish, the #1 car stole victory in the closest finish of the season.

DUO Motorsport with HMS Racing’s Rob Austin completed the final podium of the year – himself less than a second behind Sutton – as the popular Alfa Romeo driver took his second rostrum of 2018.

The Dunlop MSA British Touring Car Championship will return in 2019 with the season commencing on the Brands Hatch Indy Circuit in April. The series will will again comprise of 30 races across ten events, with the Brands Hatch GP circuit again playing host to the season finale.

Colin Turkington said: “The emotions are just so raw. I was driving around there preparing for a dogfight in race three thinking ‘how on earth I was going to get forward’. I wasn’t expecting the news on the radio that I’d won the championship. I’m so pleased for so many people. The first one, I really wanted it for me. It was my goal in 2009 and I wanted it more than anything.

“With BMW’s support coming on-board last year, it’s so special to win it for them. It’s an amazing achievement and for West Surrey Racing, too – they never give up. We’re always the last in the pits on Saturday evening – we just work, work, work. That’s the secret. We never had the fastest car this year; we just kept at it, scoring points. I’m so pleased for my family. We knew coming into the season that you’ve just got to score points. It’s very difficult to do as you can see from that race. I’ve had one win but ten podiums and they are as good as wins in this championship.

“This is the one that I wanted for my Mum, for Tipper (West Surrey Racing truck driver) and for Steve. There’s so many people that I wanted it for, I’m so pleased for them and for my mum.”

Tom Ingram said: “I gave it everything I had. The boys worked so hard for that race as they have done all season. We had to give it everything but well done to Colin (Turkington), he’s done the job again. He’s ever the professional. He scores the points and knows what he needs to do. I’d have loved to have beaten him – maybe next year. For everyone at home that have shown us so much support this year, I can’t thank them enough.

“We’ve had a stellar year and it’s fantastic to have won both Independents’ titles again. I’m going to have a little moment to myself but we know what we can work on and we’ll come back even stronger next year. We’ve not started yet!”

Tom Chilton said: “It’s been a fantastic year. Considering that we got off to a slow start, all the stars aligned. The team have been amazing; I just had to keeping kicking the gears and scoring points. I’m a bit frustrated that I didn’t manage to win the Independents’ championship, that’s the only downer from the season. But if I’m honest, third overall is epic.

“I’m feeling very happy here at Motorbase and in the car. I love my team-mates to pieces, I owe James and Sam one and if they ever need me when it comes down to the wire like it did today, I will be there for them both, 110%.”

Dan Cammish said: “What a great day, I’m really proud of the guys and the team. The fact Matt (Neal) was second shows how much potential we’ve had. To get my first win is just great – what a fantastic moment. There’s not a better place than Brands Hatch to do it, and in the sun too.

“The plan was to formation fly around the end of the race and I knew Matt would be a good wingman – it was good to have that. Matt’s a great team-mate, not only on the track but off it as well. He’s open with data and doesn’t keep anything from me. I think if I’m faster, he’s encouraged by that. Hopefully I dragged him around a little bit there too!”

Ash Sutton said: “I was happy to settle for second. That was the best race I’ve ever had and to do it with Josh (Cook) was mega. It was always the aim to go away with a win here. After race one, it was looking hard but we dug deep and I had to hunt Josh down.

“For the last god knows how many laps, I was just laughing to myself in the car. Luck wasn’t on our side this year and we had a slow start. We’ll come back stronger next year.”

Mickey Butler, Manager, UK and One Brand Motorsport Events, said: “It’s been a fantastic end to a superb season. Brands Hatch GP is one of those circuits that is kind on tyres and I knew the Option tyre would be the better one which it proved to be, it does give you the edge and the drivers love it. I think looking at every race this season, whether it’s been the Hard or Soft-Option tyres, it really mixes the races up. It makes drivers and teams really think about the different strategies they’ve got to bring in to it. Overall I’m very pleased, but wait for the surprises in 2019!”

Race 1

Dan Cammish (#27 Halfords Yuasa Racing) was handed a 30-second time penalty having been adjudged to have committed a false start in Round 28 of the 2018 Dunlop MSA British Touring Car Championship at Brands Hatch. However, stewards upheld Halfords Yuasa Racing's appeal and therefore, the result of Round 28 remained unchanged.

Sutton signs off championship defence in style

The 2018 Dunlop MSA British Touring Car Championship saved one its best until last as Ash Sutton won the final race of the season by just 0.032s from Josh Cook.

An incredible battle between Power Maxed TAG Racing's Cook and outgoing Champion Sutton had the huge crowd on its collective feet as the duo ran side-by-side and swapped positions on several occasions. Cook looked to have held off one of his best friends in the paddock going into the final corner, but Adrian Flux Subaru Racing's Sutton had other ideas. Sutton ran his Levorg around the outside of the Vauxhall Astra through Clearways and in an incredible drag race to the finish the #1 car stole the victory in the closest finish of the season.

The astonishing final podium of the year was completed by DUO Motorsport with HMS Racing's Rob Austin – himself less than a second behind Sutton – as the hugely likeable Alfa Romeo driver took his second rostrum of the year.

Tom Chilton narrowly missed out on a 50th BTCC career podium as the Team Shredded Wheat Racing with Gallagher man had to settle for fourth at the finish, although he did secure his top three place in the overall standings.

An emotional rollercoaster of a day for Tom Ingram ended with yet another top five finish as his runner-up place in title was confirmed, as well as Independents' titles for him and his Speedworks Motorsport squad.

Sam Tordoff was sixth for Team GardX Racing with Motorbase, whilst Senna Proctor rounded off another solid day with seventh – also completing a successful showing for Power Maxed TAG Racing.

BTC Norlin Racing duo Chris Smily and Daniel Lloyd claimed top order finishes with eighth and tenth respectively, whilst BMW Pirtek Racing's Andrew Jordan was wedged between them.

Ash Sutton said: "I was happy to settle for second. That was the best race I’ve ever had and to do it with Josh (Cook) was mega. It was always the aim to go away with a win here. After race one, it was looking hard but we dug deep and I had to hunt Josh down. For the last god knows how many laps, I was just laughing to myself in the car. Luck wasn’t on our side this year and we had a slow start. We’ll come back stronger next year."

Josh Cook said: "That was not the plan! What a race! I couldn’t have pushed the throttle any harder over the start/finish – I think I had two feet on it at one point. That was the best race I’ve had in touring cars. We both started at the back in race two and we got to fight through together."

Two in two for Cammish as Turkington secures unassailable standings lead

Halfords Yuasa Racing's Dan Cammish made it two wins in two with victory in Round 29 of the Dunlop MSA British Touring Car Championship, heading home team-mate Matt Neal for a second Honda one-two of the day, while Colin Turkington secured an unassailable lead atop the Drivers' standings.

The manufacturer-backed Honda squad has endured an up-and-down campaign in 2018, and left it until finals day to enjoy their best results of the season. Cammish led from start-to-finish whilst Neal benefitted from mechanical failure for the WIX Racing with Eurotech Honda of Jack Goff.

"It was a tough ask to go and win that with the ballast on-board," said Cammish. "I got my foot down early to see if I could make hay. In the middle of the race, I thought we’d have a good chance but the team came on the radio to say Matt (Neal) was struggling – I thought I had to push but quickly found I couldn’t push any more!"

Goff grabbed second early on and was pressuring Cammish for the lead when his car ground to a sudden halt on the run out on the Grand Prix circuit. Neal inherited second and followed his team-mate home for the second time today, whilst BMW Pirtek Racing's Andrew Jordan completed the podium.

Jordan's result had added significance because he kept the charging Toyota Avensis of Tom Ingram behind him, with the Speedworks Motorsport star needing at least third place to keep his championship hopes alive.

Team BMW's Turkington crossed the line in 22nd after a nervy nail-biting contest, but he had done enough to secure his third Drivers' title. It has been an emphatic story of consistency for Colin during the 2018 season but this particular race proved dramatic as he tried to keep Ingram's charge in sight. Unfortunate contact late on forced Turkington out of contention in the penultimate race of the season, but his hard work earlier in the season had already paid off.

"That was the most difficult race of the year," said Turkington. "I was trying so hard. We didn’t have the car to go forward. I was getting shuffled back so quickly. The emotions are just so raw. I was driving around there preparing for a dog fight in race three thinking ‘how on earth I was going to get forward’. I wasn’t expecting the news on the radio that I’d won. I’m so pleased for so many people. The first one, I really wanted it for me. It was my goal in 2009 and I wanted it more than anything.

"With BMW’s support coming on-board last year, it’s so special to win it for them. It’s an amazing achievement and for West Surrey Racing, too – they never give up. We’re always the last in the pits on Saturday evening – we just work, work, work. That’s the secret. We never had the fastest car this year, we just kept at it, scoring points. "This is the one that I wanted for my Mum, for Tipper (West Surrey Racing truck driver) and for Steve. There’s so many people that I wanted it for, I’m so pleased for them and for my mum."

An equally emotional Ingram had just fallen short in his incredible challenge to win a maiden BTCC title, but the Toyota star was magnanimous in defeat, whilst also able to celebrate an unassailable lead in the Independent Drivers' standings.

"I gave it everything I had," said Ingram. "The boys worked so hard for that race as they have done all season. We had to give it everything but well done to Colin (Turkington), he’s done the job again. He’s ever the professional. He scores the points and knows what he needs to do. I’d have loved to have beaten him – maybe next year. We had no tyres left, no brakes left and there was nothing more I could have done. I gave it absolutely everything. For everyone at home that have shown us so much support this year, I can’t thank them enough.

"We’ve still got the Independent Teams’ to fight for as well as second spot in the Drivers’ to secure. I can’t thank everyone enough behind the scenes. We’ve had a stellar year. We had a series of circumstances that transpired against us this year but it’s what makes you want it even more. I’m going to have a little moment to myself but we know what we can work on and we’ll come back even stronger next year. We’ve not started yet!"

Laser Tools Racing's Aiden Moffat produced another great performance to take fifth, ahead of Tom Chilton's Ford Focus and Senna Proctor's Vauxhall Astra. Seventh placed proved a great return for outgoing champion Ash Sutton as the Adrian Flux Subaru Racing star surged through from the back of the grid.

Rob Austin (DUO Motorsport with HMS Racing) and Josh Cook (Power Maxed Racing) completed the podium positions.

BREAKING: Cammish handed time penalty

Dan Cammish (#27 Halfords Yuasa Racing) has been handed a 30-second time penalty having been adjudged to have committed a false start in Round 28 of the 2018 Dunlop MSA British Touring Car Championship at Brands Hatch.
